The Reason Why Prince William and Prince Harry’s Last Phone Call with Princess Diana Still Haunts Them

They say you should always tell loved ones you love them and try not to hold grudges, because you never know the last time you’ll speak to them. Life is short, right? But this is a difficult lesson to learn even for adults. Kids know even less about the fragility of life.

That’s why it’s so heartbreaking that Prince William and Prince Harry feel guilty about their final conversation with their mom, Princess Diana. If they’d known they’d never speak to her again it would have gone quite differently.

When did Prince William and Prince Harry last speak to their mom?

The day was August 30, 1997. Princess Diana called from her summer holiday in France, where she was taking a bit of time off to spend with her new boyfriend, Dodi Fayed. When they spoke, Prince William (who was 15 at the time) and Prince Harry (age 12) were also on vacation — but in Scotland. They were busy and preoccupied during the conversation.

Prince William opened up about his guilt over the conversation during a TV interview. He said, “Harry and I were in a desperate rush to say goodbye, you know, ‘see you later.’” The future king admits that the conversation would have gone much differently if they’d known what would happen later that evening.

What happened after the phone call?

Of course, hindsight is 20/20. Everyone knows what happened next – a little after midnight on August 31, Princess Diana was involved in a car crash in Paris which ultimately caused her death. The world still mourns for the People’s Princess, and no one misses her more than her two beloved sons.

A 2017 documentary included interviews from both the princes. “If I’d known now what was going to happen, I wouldn’t have been so blasé about it,” Prince William said in the film. “But that phone call sticks in my mind quite heavily.”

Prince Harry was also deeply affected by his mother’s tragic death. “Looking back on it now, it’s incredibly hard. I’ll have to sort of deal with that for the rest of my life,” he said. “How differently that conversation could have panned out if I’d had even the slightest inkling her life was going to be taken that night.”

Prince William and Prince Harry are determined to keep Diana’s legacy alive

There is no changing the past – but there is a way to move forward. Both Prince William and Prince Harry are comforted by the knowledge that their mother loved them and knew they adored her in return, even if their last conversation was so brief.

The brothers are keeping Princess Diana’s legacy alive by telling stories of her whenever they can. Prince William often regales his kids with stories of their late grandmother, who he refers to as Granny Diana. No doubt Prince Harry will continue the same tradition once his child is born. There are even rumors that Prince Harry will pay homage to his mom by naming a daughter after her.

It’s obvious that Princess Diana raised two fine young men and would be proud of who they’ve become.
