‘The Rise of Skywalker:’ Could Anakin’s Ghost Be in This Star Wars Film?

No one is ever really gone. Does that mean Anakin Skywalker could come back for one final hurrah? Some fans hope so. Will Hayden Christensen reprise his role as the title character in this upcoming film? Could Anakin Skywalker appear as a force ghost one last time? Here’s what we know about the final film in the sequel trilogy, entitled Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

‘The Rise of Skywalker’ trailer left fans with a few questions

So, if Emperor Palpatine can come back, could Anakin? In later versions of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, actor Hayden Christensen appears as a force ghost-version of Anakin Skywalker, standing next to characters like Obi-Wan Kenobi.

In Star Wars: The Last Jedi, fans saw Luke Skywalker and Yoda appear as ghosts, interacting with the living characters of the film. Being that this final movie in the sequel trilogy is entitled Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, some fans are asking whether or not Anakin Skywalker could appear as a ghost. Although nothing has been confirmed by the Star Wars cast, Disney, or Lucasfilm, there are a few clues regarding this character dropping in for the final film.

Some believe Darth Vader could return to bring balance to the force

For some fans, Kylo Ren’s connection/obsession with Darth Vader is a huge indication of the importance of this potential force ghost. If Rey can’t convince Ben Solo to join the resistance and bring peace to the galaxy, maybe Darth Vader can. According to the AV Club, ” if Anakin’s sole reason was to restore the force and he died before that could happen, this unfinished business might be the key to his return in The Rise of Skywalker.”

There have been no reports of actor Hayden Christensen lingering around the set for The Rise of Skywalker. However, there may be a reason for that. According to Express, “the secret cameo for [Solo: A Star Wars Story,] Darth Maul’s surprise return, was shot during post-production a few months before the Star Wars spin-off was released. Presumably, this was to avoid leaks of the Sith’s big comeback, which may be the case for Christensen.”

One ‘Rise of Skywalker’ theory suggests that Anakin and Palpatine are connected

There’s no concrete reason as to why or how Palpatine came back. In fact, the Rise of Skywalker trailer did not reveal much about the Emperor’s return. However, some fans believe that because this antagonist is reappearing, there’s a better reason to believe that Anakin might. One theory goes as far as to suggest that Palpatine and Skywalker are connected. The two could be struggling forever in a battle between good and evil.

According to one theory from Inverse, “There’s also a chance that [Palpatine] and Anakin are so connected that one Sith’s return automatically means the other must join him. What if Anakin didn’t realize what the imbalance was until after he died?”

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres in theaters on Dec. 20, 2019. Until then, fans can stream Star Wars movies on Disney’s subscription platform, Disney Plus, beginning Nov. 12, 2019.
