Inside the Latest ‘Fast and Furious’ Drama: Tyrese Gibson Slams Dwayne Johnson
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has been stirring up a lot of drama with his Fast and Furious co-stars lately, and we don’t think we’ve seen the end of it. Although Johnson’s feud with Vin Diesel seemed to be on the path of potential reconciliation, we’re hoping the bridge hasn’t been burned in Johnson’s latest battle involving Tyrese Gibson.
Gibson made desperate attempts to communicate with Johnson via Instagram, putting his side of the argument out for the whole world to see. What was the cause of this public feud, and where do they seem to stand now? Here’s what we know.
1. Johnson is apparently in talks for a solo spinoff Furious film
In April 2017, around the time that the eighth Furious film, The Fate of the Furious, was released, E! News announced the possibility of a spinoff movie focusing on Johnson’s character, Luke Hobbs.
While none of this has officially been confirmed, Johnson posted a photo to Instagram, stating, “Many productive meetings and big business deals have been sealed with a handshake” — which implied that Johnson was moving forward with the solo film.
2. Gibson begged Johnson not to proceed with the spinoff
Secret weapon. Many productive meetings and big business deals have been sealed with a handshake at my GSD (Get Shit Done) table that's inside my trailer. This table holds a lot of great mana (spirit/power) and energy. And if these wood slabs could talk… well it's best they can't talk for national security purposes. Great shot by @sevenbucksprod President @hhgarcia41 capturing our post meeting aftermath. #SecretWeapon #GSDTable #LetsGetShitDone ✔️
Gibson took to Instagram (specifically, to the photo Johnson posted regarding the “business deal”), to express that he is adamantly against the spinoff.
Though the comment has since been deleted, E! News reports that the comment read: “If you move forward with that #Hobbs Movie you will have purposely ignored the heart to heart moment we had in my sprinter. I don’t wanna hear from you until you remember what we talked about.”
3. Gibson reportedly tried to reach out privately first
It seems that Gibson’s public outreach on Instagram was not his first choice of method. Gibson continued in his comment, “I’m on your timeline because you’re not responding to my text messages — #FastFamily is just that a family … We don’t fly solo.”
Gibson clearly feels very strongly about his distaste for the spinoff and felt the need to reach Johnson ASAP — no matter what form of communication it took.
4. Gibson promised to delete the public comments if Johnson responded
Although Gibson did not necessarily want to stir up drama by posting on Instagram, he knew he had a better chance of getting a reaction out of Johnson if he did so.
He promised to delete his comments on the photo once he received a response, which ET Online quoted: “I never go public with private family issues. Once you hit me back I will delete every post.”
5. And delete every post, he did
Considering the comments have indeed been deleted and we haven’t seen a public response, we are left to assume Johnson reached out to Gibson privately. Hopefully, this means the feud has subsided, but we definitely don’t see Johnson backing away from the solo film without a fight.
After all, he was reportedly a bit of a diva on the set of The Fate of the Furious, and his behavior could potentially only get worse from here.
6. Why is Gibson so angry about the rumored film, anyway?
According to Page Six, Gibson made it clear that he’s not upset with the spinoff film itself, stating, “I want you to shoot it just not right now cause the #Fast9 release date has already been announced and we can’t let our loyal fans #FastFamily or our loyal fast and furious FANS down on any level from pushing the date.”
The ninth Furious film is set for release in April 2019, and Gibson compared the release of these films to “holidays,” demanding that “you [can’t] push the release date of a holiday bro.”
It appears that his disapproval of the spinoff stems from his concern for the fans and specifically, that it would take away from the excitement and viewership of the next Furious installment.
7. Johnson’s previous feud with Vin Diesel may be a factor
Not only is this Johnson’s second feud with one of his Furious costars, but the two feuds may actually be linked — and the use of Instagram isn’t the only thing they have in common.
On Aug. 8, 2016, Johnson posted a video to Instagram, and in the caption, he referred to some of his costars as “candy *sses,” stating that they do not “conduct themselves as stand up men and true professionals.”
Though names were not directly used, some more passive-aggressive Instagram posts indicated that he was referring to Vin Diesel. Johnson and Diesel’s costar, Michelle Rodriguez, ended up confirming the feud, so we know there was definitely some beef.
According to Cinema Blend, a major cause of this feud was that Diesel had removed a scene at the end of the eighth Furious film, which would have been a setup to Johnson’s spinoff. It comes as no surprise that Gibson posted on Instagram in support of Diesel, so it seems like Johnson’s costars are teaming up to ensure this solo film is a no-go.
