The Scariest Movies on Netflix

Any time of the year is a good time to cuddle up on the couch and enjoy a spine-chilling horror flick. Whether your taste runs to psychological thrillers or old-fashioned slasher films, Netflix has something to satisfy.

The streaming platform has become one of the top sources for entertainment for people all over the country, and while the choices are almost endless, we’ve curated some of the very best scary movies on Netflix for your next movie night.

‘Bird Box’

This is the film that spawned hundreds of memes and nearly as many in-depth reviews as to what those strange, unseen creatures could possibly be. Bird Box is a Netflix original that stars megawatt actors like Sandra Bullock, Sarah Paulson, and John Malkovich.

Based on a bestselling book, Bird Box doesn’t purport to tell the whole story behind the nationwide outbreak at the beginning of the film, but rather focuses on how it affects a small group of characters, and their journey to try and find a safe haven. Bird Box will keep you on the edge of your seat, biting your nails in suspense until the very last second.

‘The Conjuring’

A good, old-fashioned ghost story with something for everyone, The Conjuring is based on real-life events, a haunting that took place nearly fifty years ago. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, seasoned horror film veterans, play paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, trying to discover why a vengeful spirit persists in terrorizing a family in their newly-purchased farmhouse.

The Conjuring doesn’t rely too heavily on jump scares or excessive gore but builds the suspense gradually. It spawned several hit sequels, but the sheer terror of the original hasn’t yet been matched.

A classic action film that scared many people out of the water for good, Jaws has it all – humor, excitement, an intriguing story, and a truly terrifying soundtrack.

Follow along as a monster great white shark stalks a peaceful vacation community, picking out victims at will – and of the men who resolve to end the shark’s reign of terror once and for all. Jaws was the film that put young director Steven Spielberg on the map and is considered to be the first great summer blockbuster. Plus, the use of practical effects and careful camera work means that every shot of the giant shark is a real stunner.

‘The Sixth Sense’

Discover M. Night Shyamalan’s masterpiece on Netflix today – The Sixth Sense is still every bit as creepy as the day it was first released in 1999.

Haley Joel Osment delivers a riveting performance as a haunted young boy who can’t escape his visions of the dead, and Bruce Willis excels as a troubled psychiatrist who resolves to help the boy deal with his demons. Whether or not you know the mind blowing twist at the end, The Sixth Sense holds up beautifully for repeat viewings, and, if anything, only seems to get creepier.

‘The Witch’

What would any list of great Netflix horror films be without the stunningly-filmed 2015 film The Witch? Set in Puritan New England, the movie follows a homesteading family that finds themselves haunted by a witch who lives in the nearby forest.

Incredibly creepy, from the bone-chilling silence of the film’s soundtrack to the grey, barren cinematography, The Witch will live in your nightmares for days following. Plus, it features one of the most terrifying finales of any film of the past several decades – on all accounts, The Witch is a must-watch.
