Prince Harry May Have Said This Shocking Thing About Donald Trump

As a general rule, the British royal family tends to stay out of American politics. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle even avoided inviting their friends Barack and Michelle Obama to their wedding to keep the day as apolitical as possible.

Since they say so little, it only makes us want to know what they really think even more. And thanks to an interview with Markle’s father, we may now have some idea how Harry feels about one of the most contentious figures in modern American history: Donald J. Trump.

Harry and Markle’s dad have talked Trump

On June 18, 2018, Thomas Markle sat down for an interview with Good Day Britain. During the chat, he revealed, shockingly, that he’s never met his daughter’s husband in person. But, he says, they have had “interesting conversations” over the phone.

Markle claims that he and Harry have discussed a wide range of political topics that are relevant on both sides of the pond. “He’s a smart guy,” Markle revealed. “We talked a few times about Donald Trump, Brexit, things like that.”

The fact that Harry was willing to talk politics with his future father-in-law shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. After all, just because royals don’t share their political opinions publicly doesn’t mean they don’t have them. What Harry allegedly said to Markle about Trump, however, may come as a bit of a shock to fans across the globe. The duchess’ father claimed that in his first conversation with Harry, the topic turned to politics.

“He was asking me how I was feeling that day, and I was telling him how unhappy I was with the president, or with the idea of Trump, and that’s how it began,” Markle said. And then, according to him, Harry offered a surprising opinion on the matter: Harry told him to “Give Donald Trump a chance.”

Harry’s feelings about Trump might be surprising

Now, this is the point at which you might be raising your eyebrows. Sure, we don’t know, explicitly, how Harry and the other royals feel about American politics. But we do know that both he and Markle are pretty committed to many social justice issues that seem counterintuitive to a lot of Trump’s political agenda.

It’s hard to know for sure what Harry may have meant when he allegedly asked Markle to give Trump a chance. But the new royal’s dad admitted that he wasn’t exactly thrilled with the advice. “I sort of disagreed with that,” he told Good Day Britain. “But I still like Harry. That was his politics, I have my politics.”

Markle also indicated that Harry seemed “open to the experiment” of Brexit.

There’s an important caveat to Harry’s Trump comments

There’s a lot we don’t know about the alleged conversation between Markle and Harry. For one thing, we don’t know if it was before or after the 2016 presidential election in the United States. We can’t know for sure what else was said about the topic. And we don’t know why Markle might have chosen to share the details of a private conversation so publicly.

And Markle admits that Harry never explicitly endorsed the U.S. president in any way. When asked if he thinks the prince is a Trump supporter, his response was a bit more vague: “I would hope not now, but at the time he might have been.”

To date, Markle is the only person to have suggested that Harry, or any other member of the royal family, has ever actively supported the Trump administration or its policies.
