The Stars React to Fashion Designer Karl Lagerfeld’s Death

When the fashion world went to sleep on on Monday night, no one thought that they would be losing one of their own.

Design powerhouse Karl Lagerfeld died in Paris on February 19th.

His death was announced on his personal Instagram.

“The House of KARL LAGERFELD shares, with deep emotion and sadness, the passing of its creative director, Karl Lagerfeld, on February 19, 2019, in Paris, France,” the caption read.

“He was one of the most influential and celebrated designers of the 21st century and an iconic, universal symbol of style. Driven by a phenomenal sense of creativity, Karl was passionate, powerful and intensely curious. He leaves behind an extraordinary legacy as one of the greatest designers of our time, and there are no words to express how much he will be missed. “

Rumors of Illness

The public first caught wind that the German designer might not have been in the best health when he missed Chanel’s haute couture shows in Paris in January.

A statement was released after Lagerfeld missed the first two shows. K

Mr Lagerfeld, artistic director of Chanel, who was feeling tired, asked Virginie Viard, director of the creative studio of the house, to represent him,” the statement read.

Though there were hints of Lagerfeld’s declining health, no one was prepared for his death.

Models, fashion designers, and regular people alike are all having a hard time dealing with the loss of such an iconic mind.


Italian designer Donatella Versace was one of the first people to give their condolences.

“Karl your genius touched the lives of so many, especially Gianni and I,” she wrote on Instagram. “We will never forget your incredible talent and endless inspiration. We were always learning from you.”

Others, like designer Henry Holland, shared their favorite Lagerfeld quotes.

“To design is to breathe, so if I can’t breathe I’m in trouble” RIP @KarlLagerfeld #karlargerfeld,” he wrote.

Model Gigi Hadid who worked with the designer often took to her Instagram stories to express her sadness.

“I’m so heartbroken I almost don’t have words,” she wrote. “There will never be another Karl Lagerfeld. Every second with you was an honor, joy, and inspiration. I wish I could give you one last hug. I love you Karl. Thank you for everything. Rest in peace.”

Former spice girl Victoria Beckham also took to Instagram to talk about her experience with Lagerfeld.

“So incredibly sad to hear this. Karl was a genius and always so kind and generous to me both personally and professionally,” she wrote.

Kris Jenner also shared her condolences via Twitter.

“It was such a thrill and a pleasure to have met you, to have worked with you, and to have experienced the amazing times when you would photograph my girls for your beautiful campaigns,” she tweeted. “There will never be another like you, my dear friend. You will be truly missed.”

Even those in the sports world are feeling the loss.

“Karl, your creativity and imprint on fashion will live forever,” racecar driver Lewis Hamilton tweeted. “God bless you. Rest in peace.”

Lagerfeld will certainly be missed.
