The Strategy Kourtney Kardashian Used to Get Her Kids to Sleep Through the Night

After perusing Kourtney Kardashian’s new site, Poosh, we learned why she chose a specific strategy to get her kids — Mason, Penelope, and Reign — to sleep through the night. As parents know, getting a child to sleep through the night can be extremely challenging. Find out what strategy worked for Kardashian and her kids ahead.

Kardashian used co-sleeping

Co-sleeping, the fancier way of saying “my child sleeps in my bed,” is the strategy Kardashian used to get all three of her children to sleep soundly through the night.  “When I had Mason, co-sleeping just kind of happened naturally so I quickly embraced it,” Kardashian wrote on her site.

She used a DockATot, a shallow cloth bassinet of sorts with high sides that act as bumpers to keep the baby from falling out. The DockATot “gave me peace of mind knowing my baby was safe and protected by this comfy barrier, so that he had his own space in the bed away from mom and dad.”

She and Scott Disick, her ex and the father of her three children, slept on either side of Mason to keep him “from rolling off the bed.” She went on to say that she traveled a lot and as a result, so did Mason and the DockATot. “I found that as long as Mason was next to me, he adjusted to ANY time zone and slept 12 hours,” Kardashian added.

What are the benefits of co-sleeping?

With her daughter Penelope, whom Kardashian calls “P,” she made the conscious decision to co-sleep. She read up on the subject, reading The Attachment Parenting Book by Dr. William Sears and Dr. Martha Sears. The authors are “known for defending shared sleeping and clearing the stigma that it’s a dangerous habit.”

According to SheKnows, co-sleeping reduces the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and makes breastfeeding easier. The practice is also said to make kids more confident, less anxious, and more well-adjusted.

Kardashian tried getting Mason to sleep in his own bed but it didn’t go as planned. When P was born, “Mason was still in my bed most nights,” Kardashian wrote on her site.

She went on to say that after failed attempts of getting Mason to sleep in his own bed, she went with the “family bed” approach.

“Many nights he would start off in his room and make his way into ours. I eventually embraced a family bed and followed his lead for when he was ready to sleep in his room,” Kardashian said. “When he was seven, he started sleeping in his room on his own.”

Reign slept ‘in his own room from the start’

Kardashian switched things up when she gave birth to her third child, Reign.

“The decision was for the good of my relationship. With two kids in my bed, Scott had begun sleeping in the guest room, so I made an effort to try and get Reign to sleep in his crib,” Kardashian said. “I actually spent the first two months sleeping in a bed in his room, as I was up at night nursing.”

When Reign grew to be three months old, she went back to her own bedroom. “He is my only baby who has always slept in his own bed in his own room.”

At two-and-a-half years old, Reign “started sleeping through the whole night without waking up for the most part.”

When he does wake up and go to his mom’s bedroom, Kardashian takes him back his room and gives him a gentle back scratch and a “lullaby to get him to fall asleep.”
