‘The Suicide Squad’ and More Warner Bros. Films Coming to HBO Max in 2021

In 2020, the future of cinematic releases has changed for good. In a time when many are willing to wait until big-budget releases arrive on streaming services to watch them, this change was always coming. But no one knew just how much it would change until the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic struck. Now, Warner Bros. is leading the way.

After announcing that the planned 2020 release Wonder Woman 1984 would debut in theaters and on HBO Max (the WarnerMedia-owned streaming service) simultaneously on Christmas Day, the company has announced it will do the same for its entire 2021 slate. Read on to learn which movies HBO Max viewers can watch at home in 2021.

In the Heights

Lin-Manuel Miranda‘s first musical, In the Heights, garnered a theatrical adaptation almost immediately. However, it took years (and Hamilton‘s success) to get it off the ground.

The film, which stars Anthony Ramos in Miranda’s role from the Broadway production, had a planned 2020 release but was delayed due to the pandemic. Stephanie Beatriz, Marc Anthony, and Miranda himself star in supporting roles. In the Heights arrives on June 18, 2021.

Space Jam: A New Legacy

At the height of Michael Jordan’s fame in the mid-’90s, the basketball player starred in Space Jam, a sports comedy that was, aside from the man himself, primarily animated. Featuring classic Looney Toons characters like Bugs Bunny, the film was a box office success, leading to a sequel 25 years in the making.

The new movie follows the same pattern, but with modern updates, naturally. It stars today’s Jordan, LeBron James, along with several other NBA athletes. Space Jam: A New Legacy arrives on July 16, 2021.

The Suicide Squad

The sequel to Suicide Squad brought Marvel writer-director James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) to DC. The Suicide Squad reunites Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, and more — though Will Smith’s Deadshot didn’t make the cut this time.

New cast members include Pete Davidson as Blackguard, John Cena as Peacemaker, and Idris Elba as Bloodsport. The Suicide Squad arrives on August 6, 2021.

Dune

Whisperings regarding a reboot of the 1984 David Lynch film began in the early ’00s, but the project didn’t fall into the hands of Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve until a few years back.

Timothée Chalamet takes on his first epic sci-fi adventure alongside a star-studded cast, including Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Jason Momoa, and Zendaya. Dune arrives on October 1, 2021.

‘Matrix 4

Nearly two decades after the double feature that was The Matrix sequels The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions comes a fourth film. Lana Wachowski returned (sans sister Lilly) to write and direct the latest installment.

Also back are stars Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Jada Pinkett Smith. New roles are played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Neil Patrick Harris, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas. The Matrix 4 arrives on December 22, 2021
