There are plenty of famous families on reality TV — and it can be tough to keep track of who’s who. From Jon and Kate Gosselin and their eight children to the Duggars and their huge family of 19, it’s hard to believe another couple famous for having a high number of children can attain fame. But once viewers saw TLC’s OutDaughtered, they knew they wanted to follow along with Adam and Danielle Busby as they navigated life with all-girl quintuplets.
We love how candid the Busbys are regarding the struggles of raising quintuplets and their eldest daughter — and fans also adore the way they first met and started dating. Here’s their cringeworthy story.
Danielle seemingly did not like Adam when they first met
There are plenty of tales of couples not getting along upon first meeting, and it’s tough to imagine Danielle and Adam being one of them. The Busbys seem totally united in their efforts to raise their quintuplets and older daughter together, and they appear to be the perfect teammates. It seems it’s taken over a decade worth of practice, however, as Danielle revealed on her blog, It’s a Buzz World, that she and Adam didn’t always see each other as soul mates.
“It all started way back in 2003 at one store that I think every woman is addicted to…Target!” Danielle wrote on the blog. She then went on to explain that after a few months of them working together at the retail giant, Adam spoke his first words to Danielle — and they were, “hey, beautiful.” Danielle went on to write, “My thoughts at first were…’oh wow! You never talk to me and now your trying to hit on me….real smooth’.” His awkward initial reaching out to her then prompted them to start eating lunch together and taking their 15-minute breaks together — and that’s where their romance first started.
Their first date was with Adam’s family
It seems Adam was totally smitten with Danielle from the moment he first saw her — but according to Danielle, she was harder to win over. “Adam finally asked me out on a date…wait I mean begged me, lol (love my version of our story), I said yes and it was his plan to pick me up after I got off work,” she wrote on the blog. Danielle then went on to explain that they made dinner plans, but first, Adam had to stop by his parents’ house to change. “Now I’m sitting in a house I don’t know with his mom, dad, and sister walking in to come talk to me…to question me, ha.”
While meeting Adam’s family on their first date was super awkward for Danielle, she then went on to explain that the plan all along was to go out with Adam’s family for Adam’s sister’s birthday — though she wasn’t informed of this. “For some strange reason this Adam guy asked me ‘officially’ to be his girlfriend later that night and wait for it….I actually said yes! Can you believe it, hahaha,” the mother of six wrote.
Despite their difficulties, they’re still madly in love
It was a rough start for Danielle and Adam, but their awkward love story just makes them more endearing to their fans. And though they’ve been married for over 12 years now (we remember when Danielle celebrated their 10-year wedding anniversary), it certainly hasn’t always been easy for the couple.
Some fans questioned whether Adam and Danielle’s marriage would be able to survive Adam’s postpartum depression, for example. People reports Adam said he felt “exhausted and done” from all the work he put in to taking care of the quintuplets, and he also said that his mental health issues “caused some issues between me and Danielle, just because sometimes I want to check out.” Thankfully, Adam sought help from a therapist and has been working through his depression for the good of his marriage and family. And, since he can reach such a wide breadth of people, he hopes to encourage other men to seek mental health help if they need it.
