The Surprising Celebrities Who Didn’t Attend the Royal Wedding

For the lucky few who were in attendance, Prince Harry and Meghan Markles’ wedding seems to have been a magical moment. There were a few surprises on the guest list, but many of the celebrities in attendance — like his old pal Joss Stone and her Suits castmates — were to be expected.

Still, there were a few very notable figured that didn’t make the cut. Here are all the celebrities that didn’t make an appearance, including a long-time friend of the royal family (page 7).

When rumors first began swirling about the royal wedding guest list, Ed Sheeran’s name showed up a lot. That was mostly because numerous sources reported that Harry and Markle asked him to perform.

Maybe they were just thinking out loud, though. Because Sheeran was nowhere to be seen, at the ceremony or the intimate reception that followed.

2. Ellie Goulding

When Prince William and Kate Middleton were married in 2011, Ellie Goulding had the honor of singing “Your Song” at their reception. Because the performance went over so well, many assumed the singer — whose fame has only grown since then — might be in line for an encore of sorts.

But Goulding didn’t get a chance to sing for Markle and Harry, because she wasn’t even invited to the wedding at all.

3. Usain Bolt

Harry and Usain Bolt have been friends for years. And the world-renowned sprinter wasn’t shy about telling the world he knew that his friend had found happiness with Markle.

In fact, they’re so tight that he was vocal about wanting to plan the prince’s bachelor party. Unfortunately, it looks like they weren’t able to pull that together. And furthermore, Bolt wasn’t photographed at the wedding or reception, which means he was probably not in attendance.

4. Rihanna

Rihanna and Harry allegedly hit it off right away when they met a few years back. And the idea of the pop queen showing up at a royal affair almost seemed too good to be true.

Alas, it was, because Rihanna didn’t make the trip across the pond to see the prince get hitched. She did offer some blunt advice for their wedding night, though.

5. Guy Ritchie

Sherlock Holmes’ director Guy Ritchie was one of the more surprising celebrity guests at the 2011 royal wedding. But many royal watchers assumed that since he’d been invited to one, he was close enough with the family to win a spot at Harry and Markle’s.

They were wrong — while he was rumored to attend, Ritchie was nowhere to be seen. Perhaps he’s just close with William, or maybe he’s drifted away from the royal circle. Or maybe he was just busy with Aladdin.

Some celebrity friendships come and go. Others, like Harry’s relationship with actress Cara Delevingne seem to be built to last. Even though she wasn’t invited to the royal wedding, despite rumors to the contrary, she had nothing but good wishes for the couple.

She told People, “I’m so happy for Harry.” And she revealed that, like the rest of us, she’d be watching the wedding from the comfort of her home.

7. Rod Stewart

We all know weddings aren’t just about the bride and grooms’ inner circle. It’s customary for the parents to have a few choices in who will be invited, too. But it seems like in this case, Prince Charles didn’t have too much of a say.

His long-time friend Rod Stewart wasn’t at Harry and Markles’ wedding. For what it’s worth, Stewart also wasn’t invited to the much-larger wedding between William and Middleton.

8. Donald Trump

On the one hand, it’s not a surprise that Harry and Markle would leave the current POTUS off their guest list. He’s a contentious figure, and one they don’t have a personal connection with.

Still, some were surprised that Donald Trump didn’t make the short list of guests invited to the royal wedding. The reason was simple enough: The couple didn’t invite any politicians to celebrate with them.

9. The Obamas

Harry’s friendship with Barack and Michelle Obama goes way back. And their good-natured rapport led many to assume that he and Markle would include the former president and first lady in their celebrations.

But “no politicians” means no politicians. Even though the Obamas didn’t get a chance to attend the royal wedding, sources say they plan to meet up with the newlyweds in the near future.

10. The Spice Girls (well, most of them anyway)

One of the biggest stories heading into the royal wedding was the rumor that beloved Britpop group The Spice Girls would reunite and perform. Then, there were rumblings that only three of the five Girls had been invited (#drama!).

In the end, only Posh Spice, a.k.a. Victoria Beckham, made an appearance at the royal affair alongside her dapper husband David. To be fair, the rest of the group never said they’d be there.
