Prince William and Kate Middleton seem to be so made for each other that it is extremely difficult to imagine one without the other. In fact, most people can’t even envision a time when the royal couple wasn’t together. William and Kate dote on one another, and it is evident just from observing them how much they truly love each other.
It has been almost two decades since the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge first met as young students at the University of Saint Andrews, both of them just trying to find their way in the world. They made each other’s acquaintance, eventually falling in love and getting married, but the relationship certainly had a fair share of ups and downs, especially in the beginning.
Many royal fans are well aware that William and Kate were friends before beginning their romantic relationship; however, it is not as well known that they, just like many other couples, broke up a few times before making it to the altar. Let’s explore the surprising reason why Prince William once dumped Kate only to get back together later.
How Prince William and Kate Middleton met
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge first met in 2001, during their college days. Kate admitted in their engagement interview that she was very shy about meeting the prince, “turning red” and “scuttling off” when they were first introduced. Apparently, she did something right, because she definitely caught William‘s eye, especially when he paid an estimated $200 to see her in a revealing, sheer dress at a charity fashion show. The two were friends first, sharing a house with two other students before they began dating and went public with their relationship.
Prince William and Kate Middleton went through breakups
There was a time when it looked as if William and Kate would not end up having their fairy tale relationship. In 2004, they had what they now refer to as a “trial separation,” and interestingly enough, it is said that Kate’s mother, Carole Middleton was the reason. In addition to William stating that he “needed space,” Carole’s former occupation as a flight attendant caused the royal family to ridicule Kate behind their back.
Although the couple was able to reconcile, another quick breakup occurred in 2007, when it is rumored that Prince Charles and Camilla urged William to split with Kate once again. At the time, William, who was facing the immense pressures of royal life, was questioning the relationship and told Kate that it “wasn’t going to work” and that “it wasn’t fair to her.” As we all know, the couple got back together and eventually announced their engagement in 2010.
Prince William and Kate Middleton eventually got married
Despite a few setbacks along the way, Kate and William became husband and wife in 2011, in an extravagant ceremony at Westminster Abbey. The event was watched by millions around the world, and it was certainly a day to remember. With Prince Harry acting as best man, and Kate’s sister, Pippa, standing beside the bride as her maid of honor, the couple stood in front of guests — including the likes of Elton John and David and Victoria Beckham — as they said their vows and promised to stand by each other forever.
Prince William and Kate Middleton’s family
It seems that the wedding was only the beginning. William and Kate welcomed the first of their three children, Prince George, in 2013, their second, Princess Charlotte, in 2015, and finally, little Prince Louis in 2018. From all appearances, it looks as though the Cambridge family couldn’t be happier. They were most recently seen at the annual event, Trooping the Colour, where Louis made his first balcony appearance at Buckingham.
Although William and Kate’s relationship had some unexpected twists and turns, we, along with royal fans everywhere, are so happy that everything worked out perfectly. We couldn’t imagine a more perfect family and future king and queen.
