The Surprisingly Sweet Way Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. Keep Their Love Alive
Remember when Sarah Michelle Gellar, also known as ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ and Freddie Prinze Jr got married? Neither do we! That’s how long they’ve been happily married. The couple has been going strong for 17 years.
It’s impressive to see a marriage last at all, but a long-standing marriage in the entertainment industry is even more of an endangered species. Find out the surprisingly sweet way they’ve made it work.
The way they met is almost like a rom-com
Gellar is well-known from her work in Cruel Intentions and, of course, Buffy. Prinze, meanwhile, made hearts flutter in She’s All That and I Know What You Did Last Summer, the film on which the couple worked together and met for the first time in 1997. They didn’t begin dating, however, until three years after that.
Gellar told People in 2002 about their first date, “We had made plans for dinner with a mutual friend and the person canceled. We decided to have dinner anyway and never looked back.”
The Scooby-Doo films costars went on to marry in 2002, but not without Mother Nature stirring the pot. Their wedding took place in Mexico, where the day before the wedding, a threatening Hurricane Hernan was 300 miles away and one day after their nuptials, a 4.6 earthquake shook the area. They say severe weather on a wedding day cements the relationship!
How many kids do they have?
After tying the knot in 2002, the couple welcomed their daughter, Charlotte, 10, and their son, Rocky, age 7.
And Gellar is a tough mom, telling Today in 2017, “I’m not a restaurant. I believe in including my kids in the process. We went to the farmer’s market and they get to pick vegetables they eat over the weekend. I give them a list at the supermarket and ask them to get something. We have a rule in our house. You have to try something 10 times and two times more before you decide whether or not you like it.”
The cofounder of the DIY baking kits and organic mixes Foodstirs, Gellar believes in getting kids involved with chores and in the kitchen. “I do a lot of cooking with the kids. I’m big on child labor. The kids have to help with the mashed potatoes,” she says. “You want them to understand what the process is. Everything doesn’t come from a box in your house.”
How they keep their marriage going
As far as staying in love, and in like, the couple has great tips. In a 2017 interview with E! News, Prinze Jr.’s advice was solid: “As long as they can make you laugh, laughter lasts forever.”
Laughter, and “separate bathrooms” apparently do the trick! “I feel like there are certain things that should just be kept your own, and they never need to know,” the actress told Harry Connick Jr in 2017. “Also, maybe, possibly, a separate shopping credit card or, if you are a guy, maybe a separate gaming card, so I don’t have to see how much video games cost.”
The couples’ sweetest gesture yet for their marriage? Recreating their first ever vacation together by returning to Las Vegas, this time with their kids.
Gellar told People, Make the most of the moments you have. Take the 10 minutes; put the phone down. Have a cup of coffee together. Walk the dog at the end of the night. Read a story with your kids.”
And they are proof it works! To 17 more years of wedded bliss!
