Born in 1956, Tom Hanks developed an early interest in the performing arts and went on to study theatre in college. In the late seventies, Hanks moved to New York City in order to pursue his passion for acting. His earliest work included an appearance in a made-for-television film called Mazes and Monsters. He got his first big break when he landed one of the leading roles in an ABC comedy called Bosom Buddies, about two men who dress in drag.

Slowly, Hanks began his transition to a career in movies, and never looked back. Early popular films of his include Splash, The Money Pit, and Big. When Philadelphia was released in the early 90s, critics sat up and took notice of Hanks’ acting chops, and from there, he started to really be taken seriously as an actor.

Over the next 15 years, Hanks would create a body of work that stands the test of time, including hits like Forrest Gump (which earned him his second Best Actor Oscar – he won his first for Philadelphia), Apollo 13, The Green Mile, Castaway, and Captain Phillips

Does Tom Hanks have a favorite film of his?

Anyone might suppose that with all those huge movies to his credit, Hanks would have long since stopped working, or at least slowed down a little. That has not been the case, and even well into his late 50s, Tom Hanks has continued to forge ahead, creating interesting, memorable characters onscreen. Hanks is also known as one of the nicest people in Hollywood and thinks nothing of taking moments out of his busy schedule to have meaningful conversations with his fans.

He also doesn’t play favorites when it comes to his movies. In 2013, Hanks was asked if he had a favorite of his own movies. The star replied, “Oh dear Lord, no.”

He went on to describe some of the adventures that he had while on the sets of some of his most popular films — including how he swam every day while filming Castaway, going through periods where he had to “eat everything” and then get back into shape quickly. Ultimately, Hanks acknowledged that he has incredible memories from working on his movies.

He did admit, however, that he doesn’t like to watch himself on screen, and if he happens to find one of his movies while watching TV, he quickly changes the channel.

What’s next for Tom Hanks?

Hanks has several high-profile projects in the works. He’s set to appear in the highly-anticipated war film Greyhound, which is scheduled to be released in 2020. Hanks will also be portraying another historical figure, Elvis Presley’s manager, Colonel Tom Parker, in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis biopic.

All in all, Tom Hanks shows no sign of slowing down. For his millions of fans around the world, who can’t imagine the movie landscape without his endearing and thought-provoking portrayals, that’s a very good thing indeed.
