‘The Talk’: Why Marie Osmond is Replacing Sara Gilbert

Changes are coming to The Talk. Yesterday, it was announced during the show that singer Marie Osmond would be joining its ranks. She will be replacing Sara Gilbert, who is leaving the talk show after nine years.

Why is Gilbert leaving the show?

Gilbert announced her exit from the popular program last month.

“I’ve decided that it’s time for me to leave the show… I obviously love it here and, like I said, this was extremely difficult,” Gilbert said on air at the time. “Last season I did The Conners and was also producing and I loved it and felt totally empowered but also, if I’m being honest about it, I think my life was slightly out of balance and I wasn’t able to spend as much time with my three kids as I’d like, or time for myself.”

“As I continued on, I’m starting to develop more things to produce and I’m having opportunities to act and I’m just feeling like, I don’t know how I’m going to do it all. I was looking at the next months and just thinking, there’s not time, you know?”

She continued, citing that wanting to spend more time with her children was one of the main reasons for her departure.

“And I’m looking at even small things in my life, my youngest is 4 years old and I still haven’t made his baby book,” she said. “You sit and you think, you know, my daughter’s looking at hers last night and I’m like, ‘Oh, he’s gonna figure it out soon!’ So, just basic life things, but it’s difficult because this is a place that I love and I’m extremely happy and I love the hosts, I love the crew, I love the staff. I’m so grateful to the audience for letting me in your homes every day. It’s such an honor and I’m not going anywhere yet, I’ll be here the rest of the season.

Though Gilbert is leaving her host role, it doesn’t mean she is gone for good.

“I will come back, I will guest co-host,” she finished. “You’re not gonna get rid of me. So I will be around. Thank you so much.”

Gilbert was one of the show’s creators and is also an executive producer. She has been a host on The Talk since it first premiered in 2010.

Why is Osmond taking over?

Osmond has been a guest host on The Talk several times over the last nine years and each time she has brought something new to the table.

“If you’ve seen Marie Osmond guest host on The Talk over the past nine seasons, you know she’s the perfect addition to the show,” Angelica McDaniel, Executive Vice President, Daytime Programs, and Syndicated Programs Development, CBS Entertainment and CBS Television Distribution, said in a statement.

“Marie’s impressive career accomplishments have endeared her to fans throughout the decades. Her willingness to be authentic and share personal triumphs and struggles with honesty in the hopes of helping others always resonates.”

On Tuesday’s taping of the show, Osmond said that joining The Talk was a dream come true.

“I  am honored to be here,” she said. “I am so excited to be here.”

When will Osmond start hosting?

Gilbert is set to finish out the season and Osmond will begin her new role in season 10.
