The Touching Gift Meghan Markle’s Father Once Got Her for Christmas

It doesn’t take a royal fanatic to know that Meghan Markle’s relationship with her father, Thomas Markle, and his side of the family has been extremely rocky. Around the time of Meghan and Prince Harry’s wedding, her father was making headlines almost daily.

Eventually, news outlets published the contents of private letters between Meghan and her father that further shed light on the tension between them. Meghan accused her dad of corresponding with the tabloids and exploiting their bond.

But their relationship wasn’t always so rocky, as one particular Christmas gift showed.

What did Meghan Markle write in the letter to her father?

Thomas decided to release the contents of Meghan’s letter to the Daily Mail.

“Daddy, it is with a heavy heart that I write this, not understanding why you have chosen to take this path, turning a blind eye to the pain you are causing,” she started the letter. “Your actions have broken my heart into a million pieces — not simply because you have manufactured such unnecessary and unwarranted pain, but by making the choice to not tell the truth as you are puppeteered in this. Something I will never understand.”

She begged him to stop speaking to the press.

“If you love me, as you tell the press you do, please stop,” she wrote. “Please allow us to live our lives in peace. Please stop lying, please stop creating so much pain, please stop exploiting my relationship with my husband. I realize you are so far down this rabbit hole that you feel (or may feel) there’s no way out, but if you take a moment to pause I think you’ll see that being able to live with a clear conscience is more valuable than any payment in the world.”

As we continue to reflect on some of the organisations supported by The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, today we wanted to share more about @TheMayhew, an animal welfare charity which The Duchess became Patron of earlier this year. Mayhew believes in the power of community and the special bond between humans and animals, which is why their programming does not simply focus on rescuing animals but rather takes a more holistic approach to shaping the lives of pets and humans, alike. Their TheraPaws dogs and volunteers now visit not just care homes and hospitals, but also mental health facilities and youth groups – expanding the benefits of animal assisted therapy into much needed areas. They also work with the homeless community assisting with treatments and check ups for their pets so that the most vulnerable can trust that their pet will remain by their side. This year, Mayhew has continued its specialized work overseas, vaccinating more than 30,000 dogs against rabies and other diseases, and empowering locals to improve animal welfare humanely and sustainably. The Duchess is also proud that they are creating opportunities for women, with the female led vet team in Kabul neutering 2,500 dogs so far this year. As a long-time rescue dog owner, The Duchess of Sussex is proud to be Mayhew’s Patron and applauds them for the vital work that they do every day. She even addressed her father’s absence at her wedding.

“I have only ever loved, protected, and defended you, offering whatever financial support I could, worrying about your health,” she continued. “So the week of the wedding to hear about you having a heart attack through a tabloid was horrifying.”

Meghan said she tried to reach out and even send someone to help her father, but he would only talk to the tabloids.

Meghan Markle once received this special Christmas gift from her dad

Though they are no longer close, Meghan and Thomas’ relationship wasn’t always this way.

Back when Meghan still had her lifestyle blog, The Tig, she wrote about a particularly great Christmas that she shared with her father.

“When I was about seven, I had been fawning over a boxed set of Barbie dolls,” the Duchess of Sussex wrote, according to Marie Claire. “It was called The Heart Family and included a mom doll, a dad doll, and two children. This perfect nuclear family was only sold in sets of white dolls or black dolls. I don’t remember coveting one over the other, I just wanted one.”

Meghan went on to say that she received an extra special set of dolls on Christmas morning: “a black mom doll, a white dad doll, and a child in each colour.” Thomas had made his own version of a family for Meghan. Thomas had made his own version of a family for Meghan.

“My dad had taken the sets apart and customized my family,” she wrote. “I picture him standing there in Toys R Us, moms glaring at him for taking the toys apart, perhaps an employee saying, ‘Excuse me sir, you can’t do that’ — as my dad carefully separated the boxed sets to make one that echoed my reality.”
