Mick Mulvaney, Donald Trump’s acting chief of staff, had a particularly disastrous press conference on October 17. When the ladies at The View got together on Monday to run down the latest hot topics, Mulvaney’s statements (and his retraction on Fox News) were a top priority.
In what became a remarkably blunt segment (even at The View), the show’s co-hosts unloaded on Mulvaney. Whoopi Goldberg, who couldn’t stop laughing as she repeated Mulvaney’s claims, wondered if Trump’s top aide knew how cameras and microphones worked.
Addressing Mulvaney’s claims, Sunny Hostin described the denials as “Orwellian.” As for Abby Huntsman, she referred to Mulvaney as “an idiot.” “He should not be on television speaking,” Huntsman added.
While Joy Behar spoke extensively on the topic, a one-liner she delivered got a big laugh from the studio audience. As Hostin noted the revolving door of Trump spokespersons, Behar quipped, “[Mulvaney] will be on Dancing With the Stars very soon.”
Behar said Mulvaney will follow Sean Spicer on ‘Dancing With the Stars’
Fans of The View come for frank discussions about politics, but they stay because they love the show’s personalities, starting with Whoopi and Behar. And even though Behar’s one-liners don’t always land, she still has plenty left in the tank.
Judging by the audience reaction, Behar definitely scored points with her shot at Mulvaney. Without interrupting her thought, Hostin agreed and piled on the acting chief of staff. Mulvaney will follow up Sean Spicer’s appearance on DWTS “very soon,” Hostin said. “With a lime-green shirt.”
Of course, that future casting decision should not be taken for granted at this point. After what’s been another down-season for ratings at Dancing With the Stars, it will be interesting to see if the show’s producers continue with more divisive bookings.
To date, everyone from former DWTS champ Adam Rippon to host Tom Bergeron and countless media critics have taken aim at ABC for its “terrible, cynical ratings grab.” The thing is, the ratings haven’t justified the decision.
Spicer’s casting remains a punch-line — even on ABC shows
What happened to home-field advantage? While you’d expect rival networks to mock ABC for choosing someone like Spicer (“a liar,” according to Rippon) for a show about stars dancing, producers are hearing plenty from its own network at The View.
But that’s one of the great things about the daytime talk-show. Between Whoopi and Behar, there aren’t a lot of [bleeps] given by the veteran co-hosts. They made their names in entertainment long ago. People tune in to hear them give their opinions — no matter what network executives think.
Most of the time, they call it as they see it. In this case, Mulvaney was an easy target after his rough week in Washington And if you’ve seen Spicer dance on DWTS, you know there is no easier target on the planet.
