The Unexpected Way John Oliver and Kate Norley Met

There’s something about The Daily Show that takes its hosts and correspondents and turns them into beloved and well-known stars. John Oliver is the latest in a long line of former Daily Show members who have moved on to bigger and better.

The former comedy show correspondent now hosts Last Week Tonight With John Oliver and shares some pretty liberal views. His political views are so apparent that when you hear where he met his wife, you can’t help but chuckle a little.

Oliver is married to Iraq veteran Kate Norley

Kate Norley doesn’t have an extensive past in Hollywood. The 41-year-old has one credit to her name, the short, Tran-si-tions. Norley executive produced and had a small part in the film.

Norley spent her life in a different way than her husband. Born into an affluent family, Norley went to a boarding school in Virginia. After the 9/11 attacks, Norley decided she wanted to do more.

The Virginia native joined the Army and worked as a combat medic in Fallujah. She also worked as a mental health specialist counseling soldiers.

On Norley’s return to the U.S., she became a passionate advocate for veterans. She has talked to numerous outlets and appeared on Fox News to campaign for more funding for veterans.

How did John Oliver and Kate Norley meet

Given each of their backgrounds, it’s hard to imagine Norley and Oliver crossing paths. But fate brought them together and they met of all places at the Republican National Committee. Oliver was there representing The Daily Show and Norley was campaigning for Vets for Freedom. According to the Boston Globe, Norley and her crew hid Oliver from security at the convention.

The two began dating shortly after meeting at the convention. They became engaged in 2010 and married a year later in October 2011.

Oliver calls his wife “very American with a capital A.” He says that Norley has changed the way that he looks at America. The comedian joked with People about how much more his wife has done with her life, “It’s the most emasculating thing I could possibly do to go out with someone who has actually done something valuable with their life.”

But their different political views haven’t stopped Oliver from being outspoken about his views on the White House’s current administration. Oliver takes every chance he gets to talk about his dislike for Jared Kushner and all the things he doesn’t love about Donald Trump.

The couple has two children

Oliver and Norley’s first child, Hudson Oliver, was born November 12, 2015. Oliver recently shared that he and his wife have added another member to their family. At the 2018 Emmy Awards Governors Ball, Oliver told People that his latest Emmy is going to go “as far away from the 3-month-old as possible.” The late-night host told the magazine that being a parent is exhausting, but also a blessing, “It’s bewildering [and] exhausting juggling that and the show. But no, it’s the greatest.”

What’s next for the couple?

Right now, the two are enjoying raising their two children. Oliver is shooting Last Week With John Oliver and he has a new movie on the horizon. Oliver will voice Zazu, Mufasa’s feathered friend in Disney’s remake of The Lion King.

The Lion King will also star Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé as Nala, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, Billy Eichner as Timon, and James Earl Jones as Mufasa. The Lion King will be released July 19, 2019.
