“The Vampire Diaries”: Are Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley Friends In Real-Life?
It’s been two years since The Vampire Diaries officially ended, but many of us still have a soft spot for the supernatural drama that gave of one of the most epic love triangles ever.
One of the on-screen relationships many of us were all about was Stefan and Elena’s, played by actors Paul Wesley and Nina Dobrev.
No one could deny the chemistry Nian and Paul had when the cameras were rolling, but the actors’ relationship behind the scenes was far from loving.
Though Dobrev and Wesley haven’t worked together in a while, has their past tension prevented them from having a real-life friendship?
Paul and Nina “despised” each other off-set
On-screen, Paul Wesley and Nina Dobrev had an undeniable chemistry that many of us believed was the same when they weren’t on set.
Though their characters were in love and had an amazing connection, Paul and Nina’s relationship off-screen used to be non-existent.
During the latest episode of Directionally Challenged, a podcast hosted by former Vampire Diaries stars Candice King and Kayla Ewell, Nina Dobrev revealed why she wasn’t the biggest fan of Paul Wesley in the early days of the show.
“Paul and I didn’t get along at the beginning of the show. I respected Paul Wesley, I didn’t like Paul Wesley,” she admitted.
Many even assumed that Paul and Nina’s on-screen chemistry translated to a real-life romance, but the actress set the record straight that that was far from the truth.
“I remember everyone would walk up to me after the show aired and they’d be like, ‘Are you and Paul dating in real life?’ Because everyone thought that we had such good chemistry,” Dobrev continued.
Though the actors barely tolerated each other off-screen, they embraced their hate for one another to make their on-screen love believable.
“And we despised each other so much, that it read as love. We really just didn’t get along the first maybe five months of shooting,” she shared
“When you work with anyone, or are spending a lot of time with anyone, little things are gonna annoy you about them,” Dobrev continued. “It’s like a relationship, we were basically married — we were together every day, we were kissing and doing all this stuff. But we didn’t have sex, so, yeah, just like a marriage!”
They eventually put their hate for each other to rest
After going a few months not being on the best of terms, Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley eventually put the hate behind them and became close friends.
With The Vampire Diaries running for eight seasons, it was only a matter of time before Paul and Nina would find themselves on good terms with each other.
They found that replacing their ongoing tension with friendship actually helped them maintain a special bond over the years.
Nina Dobrev even admitted that though she never expected to be best friends with Paul Wesley, she is happy they have such a great relationship today.
The two actors now hang out frequently and even post throwback photos from their time on set every now and again.
It is safe to say that their animosity toward one another was just a phase and having hate for each other in the past really help them become close friends.
