‘The View’: Meghan McCain and Joy Behar Get Into It Over Nancy Pelosi’s Press Conference and MAGA Hats
Many fans of The View were thrilled to see Meghan McCain take a day off from the talk show recently. The conservative-leaning co-host is known for voicing her strong opinions at the “Hot Topics” table. But when McCain returned to The View this December, she appeared visibly bristled by a comment from her frequent sparring partner Joy Behar about ‘MAGA‘ hats. While discussing Democratic Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s recent press conference video, McCain had some thoughts–as did Behar. But McCain was the one who got called out by Twitter for doing some serious pouting.
‘The View’ hosts discuss Nancy Pelosi’s viral press conference clap-back
The all-female panel on ABC’s popular daytime talk show The View were talking about Speaker Pelosi this week. The politician’s video of her powerful response at a reporter who asked if she hated Donald Trump went viral. Most of the co-hosts were fully supportive of Pelosi’s clap-back.
Sunny Hostin argued that in Pelosi’s retort, she was sending an effective message to the press. Pelosi made the case that this is about impeachment, not her personal political opinions. She also brought up that she is Cathloic, and Pelosi claimed that she prays for the President “every day.”
“‘Don’t try to frame this about emotion; this is about the Constitution,'” Hostin said Pelosi communicated with her response. “I think she blended the two pretty masterfully.” This is where McCain jumped in.
“She did answer it masterfully,” McCain admitted of Pelosi. “The problem is now she’s selling T-shirts that say #DontMessWithNancy.”
“No, she’s not,” Hostin said in disbelief.
“Yes, she is,” McCain responded. “For $39, you too can buy a T-shirt or a sweatshirt,” she added.
“Do they come in black?” The View co-star Behar retorted.
“My problem is, like, everything is a meme,” McCain said, sounding exasperated. “Everything is for the internet.” She followed up with examples of some popular political hashtags, saying them sarcastically: “#shepertisted #DontMessWithNancy.”

McCain said her main issue was with monetizing the press conference video.
“This is very serious. We’re talking about the Constitution,” the daughter of Senator John McCain, as she loves to bring up, argued. “We’re talking about impeachment.” McCain thought the merchandise cheapened the message.
“For me, it reduces it,” she continued. “It’s very reductive to start selling sweatshirts that say #DontMessWithNancy.”
But Behar never misses an opportunity to make a joke, even (or especially) when it comes to politics.
“You mean like hats that say Make America Great Again?” Behar retorted.
The live audience laughed, then started cheering at Behar’s counter. McCain, meanwhile, attempted to defend herself.
McCain pouts, Twitter dunks on ‘The View’ cast member
“First of all,” McCain began, but wasn’t able to continue due to the crowd’s uproar. That’s when she threw her hands up in frustration and crossed her arms over her chest.
“You know what, I’m just trying to make a point,” McCain said once the studio audience died down. “And I’ve never worn a MAGA hat. I think you know better than anybody that I would never wear a MAGA hat.” She seemed resigned to the crowd’s reaction.
“Politics doesn’t have to be a meme and clicktivism,” she continued. At that point, Hostin tried to nail down the facts.
“Who’s selling them?” the View host asked of the shirts. The DNC, or …?”
“It doesn’t matter,” McCain replied flatly. She stayed silent for the rest of the segment as the other hosts discussed more.
Fans of The View were not too pleased with McCain’s reaction to Behar’s joke.
“Going to stop watching a show I used to really enjoy,” another tweeter lamented. “Meghan’s pouty behavior is embarrassing, uncomfortable, and no longer tolerable. Time to find a different view.”
Other fans of The View pointed out that McCain’s point was not even accurate. One tweeter called for both the talk show and McCain to “issue an apology because @SpeakerPelosi is NOT selling those t shirts @MeghanMcCain mentioned.” In the age of fake news, it’s not the time to be making mistakes like that.
“This is a VERY important time in our country and spreading misinformation like that is unacceptable!” the Twitter user wrote.
