‘The View’: Even in Quarantine, Meghan McCain and Whoopi Goldberg Clash in New Heated Debate

Although Whoopi Goldberg moderated The View from home on Wednesday, that didn’t stop Meghan McCain from firing back at her. The panel was discussing Donald Trump’s attempt at dubbing the coronavirus, the “Chinese virus.” There was a consensus that it was not right to attach a nationality to the virus but McCain thought otherwise and sparred with the veteran co-host.

What sparked the feud?

Dan Abrams, who was a guest co-host for the day, said the political left shouldn’t get too stuck on what Trump calls it. Sara Haines said that Trump is politicizing the virus by attaching the country to the name. Goldberg then jumped in to give her opinion on the issue.

“As we’ve seen, people star punching people, Asians folks out. We need to stop labeling it like they did it to us,” Goldberg said. “Mother nature really did this to us.”

McCain didn’t let Goldberg finish speaking and interrupted her by saying that the virus started in China.

“I think if the left wants to focus on P.C. labeling this virus, it’s a great way to get Trump re-elected,” the conservative co-host said. “I don’t have a problem with people calling it whatever they want. It’s a deadly virus that did originate in Wuhan [China].”

Goldberg jumped in to add, “We shouldn’t be pointing fingers at people. We shouldn’t stereotype it.”

The debate erupts

Things then got a little messy due to Goldberg not being in the same room as the rest of the panel. McCain did not stop talking to let anyone else get a word in saying she was “happy” with people calling it the “China virus.”

Goldberg tried to get a word in but McCain kept speaking over the moderator to continue pushing her view. The comedian made disgruntled faces that were caught on camera.

“I know that you can’t hear me, I can see that you can’t hear me Whoopi,” McCain said while continue talking.

McCain said that China was spreading misinformation about the U.S. military and the coronavirus and wasn’t going to let them “get away with it.”

Both Goldberg and Sunny Hostin tried to jump in and McCain said, “I can’t tell who’s yelling at me right now.”

“No, no, no one is yelling,” Goldberg said. “I’m just trying to make sure you can hear me.”

Goldberg then compared Trump’s words to when he started his presidential campaign calling Mexicans “rapists.”

“That was effective,” McCain yelled.

Goldberg corrected her by saying it was not right to do so as it was creating tensions amongst Americans. She then threw to commercial break.

Why was Whoopi broadcasting from home?

Goldberg was moderating The View from the comfort of her home as she is self-quarantined.

“This is what we call responsible social distancing,” Goldberg said in a live feed from her home in New Jersey. “So I went to the doctor yesterday to check myself out just to make sure and he gives me the all-clear to go to work. I’m getting ready to do it and then I start hearing these inconsistent messages from everyone.”

“I just felt like if I was going to really try to figure out whether it was OK to come in … until they can get themselves together, the governor and the mayor, I should not go in. That’s why I’m still here. I am healthy. My doctor was very annoyed with me. He’s like, ‘I just gave you the OK, why are you back?’ I said, ‘because I need the OK-OK.’ So he gave me the OK-OK,” she added.

The View airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET and 10 a.m. CT/PT.
