‘The View:’ Why Meghan McCain Thanked Joy Behar On The Air
Fans of The View are used to seeing conservative co-host Meghan McCain spar with liberal panelist Joy Behar over a myriad of political issues. Both have shared that despite their heated on-air debates, they are actually good friends.
Case in point, McCain recently voiced her appreciation for Behar on giving her some valuable marriage advice.
Behar’s long courtship
Known as The View’s resident comedian, Behar was previously a stand-up comic when show creator Barbara Walters recruited her for the daytime talk show.
Behar’s personal life has always been full as well. Married to first husband Joe Behar from 1965 to 1981, the couple share a daughter, Eve, according to Heavy. The View co-host started dating Steve Janowitz, now a retired teacher, in 1982, yet the couple waited until 2011 to tie the knot.
When asked why they stalled for so long to walk down the aisle, Behar gave one of her trademark comedic comebacks. “I waited until all the parents were dead,” she joked, as reported by Heavy. “So I have no in-laws at all. He has none and I have none. ‘Cause marriage is mostly about in-laws, I find. They always want you to visit them and come for lasagna.”
Always happy to give advice, Behar contributed an article to the Huffington Post shortly after her wedding to share some details on what has made her relationship with Janowitz a success.
“We’ve discovered the key to a happy marriage. I’m out of the house 14 hours a day,” she quipped in the article. “There’s still plenty of excitement in our relationship. You should hear me scream when I land a tile on a triple word score.”
McCain’s brief engagement
Some may consider McCain still somewhat of a newlywed. Marrying political commentator Ben Domenech on November 21, 2017, the couple decided to tie the knot only a few weeks after announcing their engagement since McCain’s father, the late Republican Senator John McCain, had been given a sobering cancer diagnosis.
“We were originally going to elope before everything happened with my dad, but obviously all these things have taken on new meaning,” McCain said at the time, as reported by Heavy.
Domenech was completely on board with moving up the wedding date. “This brought into focus how important it was for Meghan to have her dad see her get married, and to have that happen while he was still fully there and fully able to participate,” he said. “This was something that she needed.”
Behar the marriage guru
Back in January, the conservative co-host took a moment to praise Behar for her words of wisdom on marriage.
“You’ve given me a lot of really good advice,” McCain told Behar, according to People. “You have given me, very good marriage advice about having to deal with a woman in the public eye and a husband who has to deal with a woman like us — who [are] very polarizing — and their reactions in the media.”
McCain may have been slightly acknowledging that her husband has been very outspoken in defense of his wife on certain matters, often taking to Twitter to stand up for her honor.
“I know Steve is a protective of you as Ben is of me,” McCain said. “And you’ve given me really amazing solid advice that is very helpful.”
While Behar was appreciative of the accolades, she didn’t recall what her exact advice to McCain had been. “What did I say, do you remember?” Behar asked her.
“Yes! But I don’t want to share it on air!” McCain responded.
Unfortunately, fans of The View will have to be satisfied with seeing the two co-hosts stick to politics when on the air!
