‘The View’: Would Fans Even Miss Meghan McCain If She Left the Show?

As far as ABC is concerned, Meghan McCain will remain on The View, despite reports that the late Senator John McCain’s daughter has felt  “exhausted and defeated” on the show.

Nevertheless, talk persists that McCain is bound to leave eventually, as she has made her frustrations public. And if McCain does leave, some fans have bluntly said they will not miss her.

With political talk being so emotionally charged, and with that emotion being part of the reason people watch The View, McCain’s departure would definitely affect the show, but for good or ill?

The official story as told by ‘The View”

After multiple stories broke that McCain was deeply unhappy with the show and on the verge of leaving, the show, as reported by EW, issued this statement: “The co-hosts and The View have had an incredible season and we expect them all back for an epic year ahead.”

Viewers noted that statement contained open-ended language, suggesting that McCain’s return may not be a sure thing. ABC may “expect” everyone back. The show would no doubt have an “epic year ahead” but that would be true whether or not McCain returns. And if she doesn’t the year may be epic in a way that ABC might not welcome.

Meghan McCain’s frustrations continue

For now, the status quo remains on The View. McCain was in the news again this week after controversy over tweets by President Donald Trump, who said that four Congresswomen should “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how it is done.”

McCain expressed disappointment with Republicans who would not speak out against the president’s remarks, saying “this is what people think all conservatives are now, and we are not,” calling their inaction “embarrassing.”

But even then, McCain continued to feel frustrated that she was one of the few conservatives to take this stance. “Someone has to come out against this. This is petrifying,” she said.”It’s humiliating for me on TV right now.”

Some fans won’t miss Meghan McCain

If McCain does eventually leave, some viewers on Reddit think that will be for the better. One said: “Victim complexes are exhausting.” Another stated: “She’s no different from Ivanka or the other Trump kids riding on the coattails of their dads with no merit of their own.”

A few isolated commenters spoke in McCain’s defense, saying, for example: “Oh no Meghan. Don’t go.” But they appeared to be in the minority.

Another commenter asked: “I don’t understand. Can’t she just quit anytime? I mean, she’s shackled with what, dollars? She can’t leave because she’s making too much money being a token conservative on the show? She’s jailed in by hundreds of thousands of dollars? Oh dear.”

Meghan McCain has been quiet about her status on ‘The View’

When the original reports broke about McCain’s alleged dissatisfaction with the show, McCain herself would not comment on the reports. For now, all indications are she’s sticking around.

Despite what people on Reddit say, other people quoted in The Daily Beast think McCain makes the show better with her inside knowledge of politics.

“What is so amazing about having Meghan on the show is she literally has inside-knowledge sources, and she grew up in the world of politics, and that has been such an asset to our show,” said Candi Carter, another executive producer.

Hilary Estey McLoughlin, the show’s senior executive producer, said: “We don’t want people to attack Meghan. We’re happy to have Meghan there.” She added: “I think she does want to be there. I think she wants to be on the show. She realizes it’s a very good platform for her and we love having her there. I feel like she will come back.”
