‘The Voice’: Blake Shelton on the Dumbest ‘Decision’ He’s Ever Made as a Coach
We all make dumb decisions from time to time and for celebrities, their not-so-wise choices sometimes get captured on TV and broadcast to millions of people. Enter: Blake Shelton. The country singer and longtime coach on The Voice just revealed the dumbest decision he’s ever made in the history of the show. Warning: spoilers ahead on the latest episode of The Voice.
Since Adam Levine’s departure from The Voice, it seems Shelton has had to pick on himself. While the country singer has been getting some pushback from fellow coach, Kelly Clarkson — he said in an interview with People published on Nov. 18, 2019, that she is “doing a great job filling the Adam ‘a**ho** void” — it’s simply not enough because Shelton called himself out on live TV.
Shelton’s dumbest decision not keeping Joana Martinez
During the Live Top 11 Performances episode of Season 17 that aired on Nov. 25, 2019, Shelton admitted the dumbest mistake he ever made happened when he let contestant, Joana Martinez, leave his team earlier in the season.
“Joana, I can’t think of a dumber decision I’ve made in the history of this show than letting you go from my team,” Shelton told Martinez after she flawlessly performed “Dreaming of You” by Selena, a song chosen for her by fans. “Every week, it’s not that you get better, because you’ve always been great — but you’re just coming into your moment on this show,” he added.

“[Joana] she was actually perfection tonight,” Gwen Stefani replied. “I was thinking, ‘Did Blake give me her as a present?’”
The teenage pop singer went from Shelton’s team to Stefani’s after a previous performance landed her a spot at the bottom. Stefani, who is dating Shelton off-screen, saved Martinez from elimination with a steal.
Martinez almost got eliminated twice
Just weeks earlier on Oct. 29, 2019, Martinez performed “California Dreamin’” by The Mamas and the Papas in a Knockout round against her fellow teammate Ricky Duran. Ultimately, Martinez lost to Duran which could’ve led to her being removed from the competition. Thankfully for her, Stefani stole Martinez from Team Blake and kept her around for more performances.
Martinez came in danger of leaving the show yet again in the second week of live playoff performances when she sang “Get On Your Feet” by Gloria Estefan. The upbeat song proved to be a departure for the singer who typically went for ballads.
In an effort to try something new, Martinez almost went home when she was placed in the Bottom three with her fellow contestants Cali Wilson and Max Boyle, according to Cinema Blend. Fortunately for her, she excelled during another performance — she sang “Superwoman” by Alicia Keys — that week that ultimately saved her from being sent home.
Whether or not audiences have reacted positively to Martinez’s most recent performance remains to be seen. The eliminations episode will air on Nov. 26, 2019, at 8 p.m. EST.
The Voice airs at 8 p.m. EST on NBC every Monday and Tuesday night.
