‘The Voice’: Did Gwen Stefani Want Nick Jonas to Replace Her?
The Voice has an everchanging roster of judges. Sure, there have been some main staples like Blake Shelton, Adam Levine, and Kelly Clarkson. But when Levine exited the show after 16 seasons, it became clear that no one’s presence on The Voice was a given.
This season, Gwen Stefani, John Legend, Blake Shelton, and Kelly Clarkson have been sitting in those iconic swivel chairs. But next season, Nick Jonas will be taking Stefani’s place.
So, why did the Hollaback girl decide to leave the show behind and did she get to pick her replacement?
Stefani’s career on ‘The Voice’
Stefani first joined The Voice as a coach in season seven. But the No Doubt singer clearly doesn’t like to be tied down as she has never done two seasons of the show back to back. She coached in seasons seven, nine, twelve, and now is coaching season 17. She also took on an advisor role for seasons eight and ten.
While on the show, Stefani began a relationship with fellow coach Blake Shelton. The two have been together steadily for four years, despite Stefani’s on-and-off relationship with the show.
Shelton even called Stefani his best friend.
“Rose, I couldn’t be happier for you, that you have Gwen as your coach,” Shelton said on an episode of The Voice to Rose Short. “Because I’ve had Gwen as my best friend, and I can see the effect that it has on somebody, the way she helps you to believe in yourself.”
Did Gwen Stefani pick Nick Jonas as her replacement?
NBC announced in October that Stefani would be leaving the show and Nick Jonas would be joining it for season 18.
Stefani revealed to Entertainment Tonight that she didn’t have a choice in Jonas’ hiring.
“No I did not,” she said when asked if she chose Jonas to replace her. “If I had a say, Nick Jonas would not be on The Voice, it would be Gwen Stefani.”
But still, NBC chose to go forward with the youngest member of The Jonas Brothers.
“As a member of one of the hottest pop groups, Nick’s success in navigating all aspects of the music industry is exceptional,” Meredith Ahr, President, Alternative and Reality Group, NBC Entertainment, said in a statement. “We were so impressed by his innate musicality, technical aptitude, and passion that he brought to Songland earlier this year and know he will be an incredible fit as a coach on The Voice. We are excited to see Nick lend his mentorship, relatability, and breadth of knowledge to a new crop of artists.”
But Stefani does have a bit of advice for the newcomer.
“Get ready to be inspired. I never imagined I would be this inspired [working on The Voice],” Stefani said during her iHeartRadio LIVE With Gwen Stefani event. “It’ll inspire you to do more.”
Why is Gwen Stefani leaving ‘The Voice’?
Stefani’s departure from the competition is actually just part of the show’s process of switching stars in and out so that they can continue their successful careers, according to Entertainment Tonight.
As Stefani will be continuing her Just a Girl residency in Las Vegas, it makes sense that the star would take a break from The Voice.
