‘The Voice’: Did the Show’s Newest Twist Just Completely Ruin Season 16?

Fans are deep into Season 16 of The Voice, and things took a hard turn. That’s because the show added a new twist that really affected the teams. Did it ruin the season? Here is everything you need to know.

Season 16 got rid of knockout rounds and had cross battles

The show previously had knockout rounds where team members go up against each other. Their coach then picks who gets to make it through. Sometimes a losing singer will get saved by another coach.

This season changed from the knockout rounds to cross battles, according to Country Living. In cross battles, coaches pick one of their team members to go up against someone from another team. Contestants don’t know who they’ll compete against until they get on stage. Viewers then get to vote on who stays.

The twist allowed 8 contestants with the most votes to get into the top 13

The show typically gives the coaches control of who gets to stay on their team with the help of viewers voting to keep others safe. However, Season 16 had a new twist that greatly affected the lineup for the top 13.

This season eight contestants with the most votes move forward into the top 13 no matter what team they are on. That twist had some disastrous results.

Team Adam Levine didn’t have anyone move through

Team Blake Shelton did the best with five contestants moving through.
Gyth Rigdon, Carter Lloyd Horne, Dexter Roberts, Kim Cherry and Andrew Sevener are his winners. Team John Legend had Shawn Sounds and Maelyn Jarmon go through. Then there was Team Kelly Clarkson who had Rod Stokes take the remaining spot.

That completely leaves Team Adam Levine in the dust. “I’m shocked at the results. … It didn’t reflect what the coaches think should be happening,” the coach told host Carson Daly according to Yahoo.

Luckily, Kanard Thomas returned thanks to The Comeback Stage. Thomas went up against L.B. Crew. Crew won but Thomas got to choose a coach. He chose Levine’s team since he had no contestants, according to Entertainment Weekly. Levine also picked Mari Jones to move forward on his team because he is the “best person in this moment.”

Fans are angry about the results

The fans weren’t happy with the outcome of the results. Some blamed this on Shelton’s fans blindly supporting him. He has won the most on the show after all because fans vote on the winner in the end. However, other fans blamed the new format.

Other fans begged the show to not keep the twist in the future. It’s possible The Voice will return to knockout rounds in the future, but there is nothing to be done about Season 16.

Levine will have a lot of work ahead of him if he has any hope of pulling another win out this season. Clarkson is also lagging behind with two artists, one of which she stole.
