The Season 15 finale of The Voice was starstudded. Next season’s coach, John Legend performed “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” with Esperanza Spalding. Last season’s winner, Brynn Cartelli also performed in the finale. The performances ranged from letting singers show off their latest songs to Christmas songs. But there is one performance that really had people talking. Halsey’s performance was criticized by fans. Here is why and how she responded.

Halsey performed ‘Without Me’ with dancer, Jade Chynoweth who played her partner on The Voice

Halsey had a moving performance with Jade Chynoweth on the Season 15 finale of The Voice. As she sang about healing a lover only for that person to leave her, the two went from cuddling in their dance to going separate ways. The singer got a lot of critics going after her for the performance so she took to Twitter to respond.

The singer tweeted that ‘representation matters’

A lot of critics tried to claim that the performance wasn’t appropriate. Halsey responded to one critic specifically who called a hug with her fellow dancer on stage “disgusting” by tweeting “I too find hugs DISGUSTING !!!” She then went on to talk about why the performance is actually very important to include on the singing competition show.

Halsey tweeted, “Very proud of the emotional performance i did with @JadeChynoweth on @NBCTheVoice tonight. And also very proud to have pissed off thw [sic] homophobic viewers at home who missed the message. Thanks for watching. 🖤🦋.”

She then followed up with another tweet, “Represention [sic] matters. Thanks @NBCTheVoice for giving a space for this vision to come to life. 🦋 and thank you @JadeChynoweth for being an incredible human who used her body like the ultimate instrument for this collaboration.

Her fellow dancer, Jade Chynoweth also tweeted her support by quoting Halsey’s first about representation then writing, “No thank you!!! The honor is entirely mine💕💕💕.”

Halsey also addressed ‘lipsynching’ during the performance

Homophobic comments weren’t the only kind of comments she got from her performance on The Voice. A lot of viewers also tried to call her out for lipsynching.

Halsey tweeted in response to that with “i don’t get why everytime I do TV people say I’m “lipsynching” like it’s 2018 are people even allowed to do that anymore? I’m not even sure these programs would allow a singer to do it if they begged to cause they’d be scared of tech difficulties compromising the show’s integrity.”

She then followed up with “Like I feel so dumb even having to address this lmao.” It’s unknown what the rules are on The Voice when it comes to lipsynching for musical guests. No one else has said that they had to lip sync, but there have been people who have been accused of doing so like Shakira when she performed “Empire.”

The Voice and the coaches haven’t addressed any of the criticism around Halsey’s performance so far. But Halsey is standing strong with the message that the performance includes around LGBTQ representation.
