‘The Voice’ Season 13: Is 2 Cyruses 1 Too Many?
As the premiere date draws near, The Voice fans are gearing up for Season 13 of the reality talent competition, which already has a ton of buzz surrounding it with the announcement of a new coach and new mentors.
Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson will be joining the coaches this season, while “Malibu” artist Miley Cyrus will also return to the red chair. Hudson knows how to beat out the competition as she served as the winning coach on The Voice U.K. earlier this year, but will she top Cyrus and the other coaches this season?
We’ll have to wait until The Voice premieres on Monday, Sept. 25, at 8 p.m. Eastern. In the meantime, here’s everything we know so far about the upcoming season of the NBC hit show.
1. Jennifer Hudson is a new coach and will team up with Kelly Rowland
Hudson brings enormous talent to the show, and NBC executives are excited to have her.
“Jennifer is an extraordinary vocal talent and one of the premier voices of our time. She embodies the experience, expertise, positivity and sheer talent that The Voice stands for,” Paul Telegdy, president of NBC Entertainment’s Alternative and Reality Group, said in a statement. “Her exceptional skills as a singer and actress have extended to film, television and Broadway, which makes her an incredible addition and a natural fit for our show.”
Serving as an advisor for Team Jennifer will be Destiny’s Child alum, Kelly Rowland.
2. Billy Ray Cyrus will join Team Miley
It will be a family affair for Cyrus whose father, Billy Ray Cyrus, will be joining his daughter’s team as a new mentor this season. That pairing does beg the question: Is two Cyruses one too many or will Miley Cyrus and her dad create one of the best teams we’ve seen on this show in 12 seasons?
We’ll have to wait and see.
3. Joe Jonas joins Team Adam
Returning coach Adam Levine confirmed via Instagram that DNCE frontman Joe Jonas will be joining his team this season.
“Watch it @joejonas I can tell those are your adorable little feet. Don’t you dare park there…😡,” Levine jokingly captioned the post.
4. Rascal Flatts joins Team Blake
Not to be outdone, Blake Shelton’s team will have some star power advisors as well. Shelton has called upon Jay DeMarcus, Gary LeVox, and Joe Don Rooney of Rascal Flatts to be the Team Blake mentors for the upcoming season.
“Blake’s got such a great ear turning his chair around and finding great people, so it’s been awesome meeting them and giving them some tips,” LeVox said. “It’s been a lot of fun working with him. A lot of talent, a lot of talent on Team Blake.”
5. Hudson reveals her strategy to win
Hudson is not new to the reality competition series, having served as a judge for The Voice U.K., but now she’s feeling out her new fellow coaches and putting a plan in place that she thinks will help her win. The 35-year-old revealed that she’s been watching the others closely and seeing how they do things in order to figure out her own strategy.
“It’s almost like a game,” the 35-year-old said. “You’ve gotta strategize, like, ‘Okay, what’s Blake over here doing? What’s Adam doing? Okay, now what am I gonna do? … Miley! Get out the way!'”
6. The coaches are already having fun together
The Season 13 coaches already look like they’re having fun together in a new promo for the show. Hudson, Cyrus, Levine, and Shelton star as ’70s crime fighters in the video, which was released on Aug. 29.
The Voice host Carson Daly also appears in the promo as “Lug Nut.”
7. Kelly Clarkson is already confirmed as a coach for Season 14
The Voice fans got a bonus announcement from Shelton back in May when he revealed that Kelly Clarkson will be one of the new coaches for Season 14, which will air in the spring of 2018.
“This person is a very near and dear friend of mine, this person is somebody that I consider to be family and this person is extremely talented …We have felt as a family at The Voice that this person would fit in perfectly,” Shelton said about the “Piece by Piece” singer.
There was a bit of chatter that Clarkson, who was the very first American Idol winner, would be a judge alongside Katy Perry for the upcoming ABC revival of Idol. However, this announcement confirmed that Clarkson will be busy over on NBC instead.
8. Gwen Stefani will be back on future seasons?
Fans of Gwen Stefani may have been a little down when they learned that the artist will not be sitting in a red chair during Season 13, but Shelton’s girl could return for another season at some point.
“Once you’ve got a red chair, you always have a red chair,” show producer Mark Burnett told ET. “Coaches go on tour and make albums. This is the challenge of The Voice, is fitting into the schedule of these currently top-selling artists… [but] we love all our coaches.”
