The Voice has been great about getting coaches that are still creating hit music. However, you might wonder what’s in it for them to help unknown artists win the reality show instead of working on their own art? Kelly Clarkson and John Legend revealed their reasons for joining the show.

It was previously announced that John Legend is joining the show as a coach and Jennifer Hudson won’t be returning for Season 16. Legend isn’t completely new given he previously was a battle advisor for Adam Levine.

I’m thrilled to join the coaches of The Voice,” said Legend in a statement according to The Hollywood Reporter. “I’ve been a guest and mentor on the show multiple times, and I’m so excited to discover talented singers and help them make the most of their gift. I hope the world is ready for #TeamJL.”

He is now going up against Blake Shelton, Adam Levine, but also Kelly Clarkson. All of them have multiple wins on the show, but Legend is the only EGOT winner between them.

So why did Legend decide to take a break from working on his own music to do The Voice? There is a very sweet reason behind his choice.

Legend said he joined to be close his kids

Recording artists often have to tour to make money so if there is a gig where they don’t have to travel and pays, then they’ll probably take it. Legend talked about this in an interview.

It’s fun, and it’s a chance to be home,” Legend told People. “You get to work in Los Angeles where you live, and I get to see my kids all the time. It’s actually quite nice.”

He also said having to travel to work isn’t bad. “It’s nice to be close to home. [It’s a] quick commute and I’m there when they go to bed most nights.” Clarkson also talked about this perk of the coaching job.

Clarkson said she didn’t know when American Idol would return

The Voice set seems to be a very family-friendly set. “My kids love coming to set not to see me, but to see Carson’s kids or Gwen’s kids ’cause they go to school together,” Clarkson told People. “I’d love to think they come to see me, but they don’t!”

When it was announced that Clarkson was joining the show back in Season 14, it was shocking since she rose to fame on American Idol. She told Ellen DeGeneres why she didn’t become a judge on that show instead.

“Here’s the thing, let’s keep it real. I thought [Idol] was ending,” said Clarkson. She said the last time she visited the show before it was canceled there was already talk about reviving it. However, the singer had no clue when that would be.

When it was announced American Idol is officially coming back “I had already been in talks with The Voice,” said Clarkson.

In the end, Clarkson and Legend are taking advantage of being in one place to film The Voice to be with their kids. Clarkson also didn’t know when American Idol was coming back so she took the chance to be on The Voice.
