‘The Walking Dead’: Seth Gilliam Talks Father Gabriel Trying to Find Common Ground with Negan and More

The Walking Dead is back for season 10 and once again the dynamics are changing between characters. We’ve seen Carol (Melissa McBride) and Daryl (Norman Reedus) talk about running away together. Then there is the fact that Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) is getting closer to the group.

Showbiz Cheat Sheet talked to Seth Gilliam at PaleyFest on Oct. 5. This is what he had to say about Negan and Father Gabriel trying to find common ground this season and more.

The villain is getting closer to our main characters mainly because he’s imprisoned by them. Father Gabriel spends some time talking to Negan, which changes their relationship. Gilliam said this was a fun story to act out.

“It’s a lot of fun for me,” he told Showbiz Cheat Sheet. “I love the relationship between Negan and Father Gabriel. I think it’s an interesting dichotomy between the two of them. Yeah, they’re like polar opposites but trying to find some kind of common ground. It’s been fun exploring with the characters.”

Negan also gets some time out of his cell this season. Gilliam explained, “These are day passes. You know this isn’t like ‘Okay, you can roam around Alexandria for the next six months.’ This is ‘You get about six hours to pick some fruit then back into the cage with you.'”

Father Gabriel was introduced to The Walking Dead in season 5. A lot has changed since then.

“I think he has a sense of purpose in this new season that he didn’t have when we first encountered Father Gabriel,” said Gilliam. “I think he was kind of a lost soul. And I think he’s got a purpose, a sense of responsibility and obligation that he’s looking forward to bearing up.

The priest got sick in season 8 and lost sight in his right eye. Gilliam talked about what it’s been like to work with this change.

“It’s interesting because I can’t really see anything out of it and it kind of messes with my depth perception,” he said. “But it’s more interesting to see what people’s responses when they’re talking to me trying to figure out which eye to look into.”

This season will focus on the group dealing with The Whisperers. There are borders established and the crossing of them could lead to a war.

It’s certainly an interesting time for the show to adapt this story from the comics given today’s headlines. Gilliam talked about why he’s looking forward to fans seeing how it plays out.

“It’s very topical I think,” he said. “I’m very excited. You know anytime a show can have parallels with what’s happening in the real world. I think there’s an opportunity to mine some some hard truths and I think we’re going to tackle it.

The actor is one of the many cast members who will be saying goodbye to Danai Gurira this season. He talked about his feelings about her moving on from the show.

“I personally am sad to lose that Danai from the show because she’s a terrific actress and she plays so much to the show as a whole,” he said.

Fans will have to keep watching to see how her character, Michonne will exit the show and how the relationship between Father Gabriel and Negan will change things.
