The Weirdest Reasons ‘Real Housewives’ Stars Have Left the Show
For sheer drama and entertainment value, nothing beats the Real Housewives franchise. The shows, which started with the Real Housewives of Orange County in 2008, have spawned dozens of celebrities, from Nene Leakes and Kim Zolciak to Vicki Gunvalson and Kyle Richards. Since not everyone can stay on a TV show forever, some shake ups in the housewives lineup are expected – however, a few cast members, in particular, have gone out of their way to make their exits as strange as possible. Here are the weirdest reasons that various housewives have taken their leave of the franchise:
Danielle Staub was ‘too good’ for TV
One of the original stars of The Real Housewives of New Jersey, Danielle Staub was often placed in a villainous role throughout her time on the show. She repeatedly butted heads with various other cast members and took a lot of heat on social media for her comebacks and insults. However, the stress of being a “bad girl” might have been a lot for Staub to handle, and after two seasons, she left the show. Staub’s reasoning left a bit to be desired, as she explained in a later interview that she was “way too good” for the show.
More New Jersey drama
The Real Housewives of New Jersey suffered a blow even before Danielle Staub left the show when Dina Manzo abruptly quit the show in the middle of the second season. Her reasoning was similarly dramatic, as she claimed that she was quitting because she couldn’t stand being around Danielle Staub. Turns out, if she had waited a little bit longer she wouldn’t have had to film alongside Staub anymore, but apparently the drama was too much for her to handle.
Manzo ended up returning to the show several years later, only to quit again in 2016, this time claiming that she definitely wouldn’t be back.
Bethenny Frankel’s business ventures
One of the original Real Housewives of New York City, Bethenny Frankel has now become one of the most well-known of the housewives cast members. However, at the time when she dramatically announced her departure after the third season of the show, it raised more than a few eyebrows. Bethenny Frankel claimed that the third season had been both scary and painful for her and that her gut told her she needed to separate herself from the cast.
Since then, Frankel has returned to the show, as well as launching her own very successful line of ‘Skinnygirl’ cocktail and wine products. But her initial exit still stands as one of the most dramatic and widely publicized departures in Housewives history.
Kim Richards’ rehab stay
Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Kim Richards (along with her sister Kyle Richards) are two of the most popular stars of the franchise. She gave fans a start in 2015 when the initial news broke that she would not be returning for the sixth season of the hit show. Shortly after that bombshell broke, it was revealed that Kim Richards, who had struggled with her addiction problems for years, had decided to go to rehab, and for that reason alone, would be on indefinite hiatus from the show. Whether her leaving the show was a result of her quitting or of the producers letting her go remains a mystery and one that is never likely to be explained in full.
No matter what your favorite series may be, the Housewives franchise is always guaranteed to entertain – even when some of your favorite cast members decide to unceremoniously part ways with the show in highly dramatic fashion.
