‘The Witcher’: Henry Cavill Reveals How His Character Geralt Is ‘Like Us’

The Witcher, starring Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, is a story in the fantasy genre. Therefore its characters might not be expected to be fully realistic. Though given the success of shows like Game of Thrones, with realistic characters, it might not be a bad idea to incorporate realism into fantasy.

According to the actor, Geralt is “like us.” He is a realistic character who just happens to belong to a fantasy world. Find out how Geralt is realistic, according to Henry Cavill, and explore a little bit of the world of The Witcher, ahead.

Why was Henry Cavill chosen to play Geralt in ‘The Witcher’?

Cavill beat 207 other actors for the role of Geralt. He was extremely persistent and his persistence paid off. According to the showrunner, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, she “kept hearing Henry’s voice in [her] head” while writing. She goes on to say that “Geralt is fearsome, but he also has this amazing dry wit.”

Because of this, the show “needed someone to play both ends of the spectrum, someone who could see all the trauma of the world he’s in but could also step back and roll his eyes once in a while.” The show seems to have found this person in Henry Cavill. If fan reactions to the trailer are anything to go by, fans seem to be loving Cavill as Geralt so far. Only time will tell if the show will live up to fans’ expectations.

According to Henry Cavill, who portrays Geralt in The Witcher, “It’s funny how much he’s actually like us.” The actor goes on to say that “Geralt has that thing of trying so damn hard and being misconstrued or not appreciated.” Many people can probably relate to that feeling. Sometimes, despite someone’s best efforts, what they do is not understood or appreciated by others.

Cavill continues by saying that Geralt has to deal with “people having a negative opinion of [him], despite [him] actually trying to do the right thing.” That’s another feeling that many people can probably relate to. Sometimes, no matter how you may be trying to do what is right, others will not always understand or believe that.

According to an interview with Men’s Health, Cavill says he is most excited about “the chance to understand Geralt’s place in the world.” Though he is also looking forward to the chance to do some stunts, Cavill is also excited to really dive into Geralt’s character. And fans are likely excited for both equally. Action is important in any fantasy story, as are well-written characters.

And Geralt, as he is “like us” in many ways that Cavill has described, will likely be a well-written character and easy to relate to for many fans. Hopefully The Witcher, with Henry Cavill as Geralt, will delight fantasy fans for a long time. Netflix seems to think it will. And fans of the books and games are likely hoping that it will please them as well.

Cavill certainly seems to embrace his role as Geralt, and that can only lead to good results for the show. The fact that the actor cares about the role so much can only lead to better performance. And fans are likely glad that Cavill cares so much.
