‘The Witcher’ This Is How Many People Have Already Watched the Netflix Show

Netflix might be facing stiff competition from new streaming services like Disney+, but it appears to be holding its own. The company revealed viewership numbers for some of its recent releases during its Q4 2019 shareholder letter. It turns out, millions of people are hitting play on movies like 6 Underground and Klaus and shows like The Crown and You. But the big winner for Netflix has been the fantasy series The Witcher

The Witcher is widely seen as Netflix’s answer to HBO’s recently departed megahit Game of Thrones. Based on a series of fantasy novels that later spawned a popular video game series, the show received mixed reviews from critics. But that apparently didn’t deter people who were in the mood for some sword-and-sorcery television around the holidays.

Within four weeks of its Dec. 20, 2019, release date, 76 million households had watched The Witcher. That puts it on track to be Netflix’s biggest season 1 TV series ever. The streaming service also gives the show credit for boosting sales of Andrzej Sapkowski’s original novels and the video games it inspired.

Seventy-six million households is a huge number, but it comes with an asterisk. In the shareholder letter, Netflix explains that it recently adjusted how it reports viewership. Previously, a view was recorded if a household watched 70% of a movie or a single episode of a show. Now, people just need to watch 2 minutes of an episode or movie for it to count as a view.

Netflix thinks it’s got Disney+ beat

In the letter, Netflix also addressed competition from Disney+ and Apple TV+, both of which launched in the fourth quarter of 2019. It pointed to Google search trends for flagship shows from those two platforms, as well as Amazon Prime, to argue that interest in The Witcher far outpaced that for Disney’s The Mandalorian, Apple’s The Morning Show, and Amazon’s Jack Ryan

Data from Parrot Analytics shows that The Witcher and The Mandalorian are in neck-and-neck for the title of most in-demand streaming series. The two shows have been trading off for the No. 1 and No. 2 spots in recent weeks. Those rankings are based on demand expression, which looks at video streaming, social media, photo sharing, blogging and micro-blogging, fan and critic rating platforms, peer-to-peer protocols, and downloading/streaming sites to determine audience demand for a particular show.

Will there be a season 2 of ‘The Witcher’?

With record-high viewership numbers for The Witcher, it’s no surprise that the show will be back for season 2. The show, which stars Henry Cavill as monster hunter Geralt, got an early renewal before the first season premiered.

“I could not be more proud of what the amazing cast and crew of The Witcher have accomplished, and can’t wait for the world to dig in and enjoy these stories with us,” showrunner Lauren Hissrich tweeted in Nov. 2019. But fans will need to be patient. Given how long it takes to produce new episodes, we likely won’t see The Witcher Season 2 before 2021.
