The X-Files premiered in 1993 and quickly gained a huge following, as fans couldn’t wait to see what adventures FBI special agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) would find themselves in. The sci-fi  drama continued to run for nine seasons and spawned two movies. In 2016, Fox revived the series with a six-episode Season 10. Now, there is another chapter fans can look forward to with Season 11.

On Oct. 8, 2017, an exciting new trailer for the upcoming season debuted at New York Comic-Con. Here’s a peek at that, as well as a list of everything else we know about Season 11 of The X-Files.

The release date for Season 11

In this tweet last April, it was revealed that the show would definitely be returning for another season, although a release date was not given. We have since learned that production began over the summer, and Season 11 will air on Fox in January 2018.

New Season 11 trailer unveiled

A brand new trailer for Season 11 debuted at New York Comic-Con.

The cast and show creator, Chris Carter, spoke with fans during a panel and discussed all things X-Files. Carter even left open the possibility that there might be a third movie in the future.

More episodes than last season

Duchovny previously explained that he would not be able to commit to a full 22-episode season and thought that would be too long. But he also felt that the six-episode format, which made up Season 10, wasn’t enough.

“I think there were too few episodes,” the actor said. “Twenty-two is far too many, but six is too few, so we’ve got to figure out something right in between.

Apparently, the studio agreed because Fox ordered four more episodes. So Season 11 will have a total of 10 episodes.

Some familiar faces will be back

We will see plenty of familiar faces returning in Season 11. Anderson and Duchovny will be joined again by their longtime costar Mitch Pileggi, as well as William B. Davis and Annabeth Gish.

Fans will also be pleased to know that Karin Konoval, who played a mutant-breeding amputee kept under a bed in the 1996 episode “Home,” is returning to the show. While Konoval will not be reprising her super scary role, she will be playing multiple characters throughout the season.

Brian Husky to guest star, Barbara Hershey joins cast

As for who else we’ll see in Season 11, well, thanks to a tweet from Anderson we learned that actor Brian Husky will guest star on the series as the character Reggie.

In addition, legendary actress Barbara Hershey has been cast and will play the part of Erika Price, an insider from another organization.

Season 11 will include standalone and mythology episodes

At the 2017 TV Critics’ Association press tour, Fox’s President of Entertainment David Madden expanded on the themes of the Season 11 episodes.

“The first episode will be a mythology episode, though it will be a much simpler mythology episode than last season. Then there will be eight standalone episodes, and [conclude with a mythology episode],” Madden said, adding, “We’ll touch on the mythology a little bit in those intervening episodes.”

Season 11 picks up where Season 10 left off

Season 10 ended with a cliffhanger, so the first episode of Season 11 will dive right into where we left off. To recap, the fate of the entire human race is on the line because of a Spartan virus. Meanwhile, Scully said that they have to find their long-lost son, and an alien spacecraft has just arrived overhead.

“We will then get launched into a very urgent adventure, which will have a lot to do with William, Mulder and Scully’s kid,” Madden said. “The search for William will be a significant thread through this show.”
