There’s 1 Good Reason Why Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle Have It Way Worse Than Princess Diana Did
There’s no debating that Princess Diana was hounded by the press. Some fans and family members have even concluded that the media indirectly caused her death.
That’s because the world was obsessed with the beloved People’s Princess. Publishing photos of Diana inevitably sold papers, which caused photographers to go to greater lengths to snap her photo, fueling even more interest in her life. It was a vicious cycle that abruptly ended in a fatal car crash on August 31, 1997. She and her companion Dodi Fayed were trying to escape overly aggressive paparazzi.
Things are much different now for Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle than they were back then. New laws help protect royals from the worst tactics that paparazzi used in the past. But there is one key distinction that makes things harder for the two newest royal wives, and it’s something Princess Diana never had to deal with at all.
Now everyone’s a photographer
When Princess Diana was the most popular royal family member, only professionals (or aspiring professionals, anyway) were following her around with cameras. For Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle? There are literally cameras everywhere.
Former ITV News royal editor Tim Ewart explained it this way to Yahoo UK: “Now every single person that a member of the Royal Family meets has a smartphone up.”
“Every single word that is said, doesn’t matter where the TV cameras are, doesn’t matter where the snappers, the photographers, they can be anywhere. But every single person has got their phone up or their iPad up, nothing is private anymore.”
Meghan Markle is desperate to find some privacy
Before she met the Duke of Sussex, Meghan Markle was a moderately successful television actress with a recurring role in the show Suits. But after they took their relationship public, her popularity exploded. Now she’s fighting back by trying to keep as close to normal life as possible. It’s not easy.
As Ewart explained, “Suddenly to come into this cauldron, into this Royal Family is beyond anything that she [Meghan] could ever have expected and it will be very, very difficult for Harry, as it was with William with Kate, to explain just how intense that is.”
“How every single every expression, movement, comment – bang – that’s going to be on the front page.”
The constant attention ruined several of Prince Harry’s and Prince William’s relationships.
Kate Middleton seems to be handling things better than Meghan Markle
Even the most patient person would have a difficult time adjusting to being scrutinized every time they left the house. Somehow, Kate Middleton makes it look easy, and while she probably doesn’t love constantly being photographed, she puts up with it for the sake of her role. It’s a very different situation compared to how Meghan Markle has reacted to the spotlight.
Princess Diana didn’t have to deal with smartphones, it’s true, but she’d definitely be sympathetic to her daughter-in-law’s difficult relationship with the press. Having your whole life on display isn’t easy. Especially when there are children involved.
