There’s a Major Plot Twist In ‘The Rise of Skywalker,’ But What Could It Be?

The clock is ticking away on the hours until The Rise of Skywalker is released onto the world. The major Star Wars film will no doubt blow people away with its Force powers. But on top of that, there are a lot of loose-ends it needs to close since it is the final Skywalker film. And now, an actor in the movie revealed that there would be a significant twist for one character, which is cryptic as hell. Who, and what, could that be?

Potential spoilers ahead for The Rise of Skywalker.

Richard E. Grant teased the big “twist”

In an interview with Yahoo, actor Richard E. Grant talked about a big surprise that happens in Episode IX. “The big character plot twist that I had no idea would be coming. It made total emotional sense and story sense and I thought that was really smart,” he said. “And I think that’s an incredible thing to take something that began with the first movie in 1977 and nine movies later reach a conclusion/resolution.”

Grant starred in 2018’s Can You Ever Forgive Me? as well as many other hits over the years like The Iron Lady and Logan. For The Rise of Skywalker, Grant is in the role of Allegiant General Pryde of the First Order.

Rey seems like the best candidate to receive the twist

Of course, that’s all he gave away. The best guess to whom he was talking about is Rey. Her origin, before The Force Awakens, is still unknown. Sure, Kylo Ren told her that her parents were just filthy dumpster rats on Jakku, but fans think he was lying or not telling the full truth.

And, in an interview with Empire magazine, writer Chris Terrio confirmed we don’t know the full truth. “[‘Who is Rey?’] is a question that people not only wonder about quite literally, but wonder about in the spiritual sense,” he said. “How can Rey become the spiritual heir to the Jedi? We kept coming back to ‘Who is Rey?’, and how can we give the most satisfying answer to that not only factually – because obviously people are interested in whether there’s more to be learned of Rey’s story – but more importantly who is she as a character? How will she find the courage and will and inner strength and power to carry on what she’s inherited?”

There are theories and “spoiler leaks” that Palpatine created Rey the same way Anakin was conceived: through the manifestation of Midichlorians. This reveal would mean Rey was a Palpatine creation and intended for the Dark Side, to balance it in his favor. What The Rise of Skywalker and Rey does with that is, of course, unknown.

Grant believes the ending will still please fans

The part of his quote about how this new film connects back to the original is also a mystery. As CinemaBlend pointed out, this could either refer to something specific that connects to A New Hope or just the ending of a saga that started four decades ago.

In that vein, Grant also told Yahoo that people might react to this final installment in a similar dissatisfaction that they did to the end of another major franchise. “It runs the risk of the Game of Thrones syndrome, where there’s no way you can please all the people all the time, because people are so emotionally invested in this story,” he explained.

Despite that, he still thinks it will please fans. “The movie that they’re going to see may not be the movie they have in their heads to see. But for a four-decade-long fan, as I am, I thought it pulled off that feat incredibly.”

Whatever happens with Episode IX, it looks like it’s going to flip the heads for so many fans.
