‘There’s Huge Merit in Talking About Your Issues’: Prince Harry’s Encouraging Words About Therapy Everyone Should Hear
Prince Harry won’t be a senior member of the royal family for much longer. As he and Meghan Markle prepare to embark on a whole new life, many wonder what the couple’s next steps will be. Prince Harry and Markle have expressed the desire to form their own charity, so that will certainly be part of their future endeavors. Additionally, Prince Harry has a longstanding interest in helping charities who promote mental health. Based on some recent remarks from the royal, his commitment could be more intense than ever before.
Prince Harry is an advocate for mental health and wellness
Prince Harry was only twelve years old when his mother, Princess Diana, passed away in a tragic car crash. The combination of losing his mother at such an early age and the pressure of having to grow up in the spotlight took quite a toll. The royal later admitted that he struggled with his mental health for years. In 2017, he gave a revealing interview where he talked about how he battled both panic attacks and rage. He even stated that he was “close to total breakdown on numerous occasions when all sorts of grief and lies and misconceptions are coming to you from every angle.”
The royal spent many years in therapy, working on his issues. As a result, he’s been very open about his support for therapy and behavioral awareness. Foremost among members of the royal family, Prince Harry has encouraged mental health awareness; he has even spoken out to say that no one should be ashamed in talking about how they feel. “I know there is huge merit in talking about your issues, and the only thing about keeping it quiet is that it’s only ever going to make it worse,” Prince Harry stated in 2017.
Did Prince Harry step away from the royal family to save his mental health?
When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle dropped their bombshell announcement on January 8th, the world was shocked. Royal fans weren’t sure what exactly pushed Prince Harry over the edge, or what the catalyst was for him to break away from the royal family tradition. Prince Harry has remained mostly tight-lipped regarding the specifics, but he did speak out shortly after the big announcement, revealing that at least part of the reason for stepping away is so that he and Meghan Markle can better protect their young son, Archie Harrison.
During his recent speech, the royal also reportedly revealed that he is still in therapy, and regularly speaks to a mental health professional. Therefore, it seems likely that stepping away from the royal family could be a move to improve his mental health.
What’s next for Prince Harry?
Prince Harry definitely won’t be leaving behind his passion for mental health as he goes into his new life. In fact, the royal is working on a mini-docuseries with Oprah Winfrey that will focus on mental health and wellness. According to reports, the series will premiere exclusively on Apple TV+ and has a lofty goal – to “inspire viewers to have an honest conversation about the challenges each of us faces.”
While a release date has not yet been given, there’s no doubt that as the first major project released after Prince Harry’s big exit announcement, the series will get some serious viewership. As time goes on, it seems likely that Prince Harry will only double down on his efforts to increase mental health awareness.
