These Are the Best Original Shows on Amazon Prime Right Now

Netflix isn’t the only media provider dishing out top-notch original content. Amazon joined the streaming game back in 2006 as the little known VOD service, Amazon Unbox. It became the Amazon Prime Video we all know and love after a series of rebrandings.

Now, users can enjoy a wide range of pre-existing and amazing original content alongside tons of other perks with their Amazon Prime account.

Bosch debuted on Amazon Prime Video back in 2014 and has been going strong ever since! The series is going into its 5th season, a move that made its die-hard fans ecstatic! So what’s up with the long-running show? Bosch follows the journey of a Los Angeles Police Detective Bosch as he works to solve the murder of a 13-year-old boy. But that’s not all. Bosch is also standing trial for “permanently” taking down a serial killer. Now that’s street justice!

The show is just a measly 5% away from earning a coveted 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, not surprising considering the gripping plot! Bosch stars Argo’s Titus Welliver as our street savvy protagonist as well The Wire’s Jamie Hector, The Lazarus Effect’s Amy Aquino, and John Wick’s Lance Reddick.

‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is an award-winning show with a lovable cast. Headliners include two-time Golden Globe winner Rachel Brosnahan as Maisal, Golden Globe winner Tony Shalhoub as Abe Weissman, and Golden Globe-nominated Alex Borstein as Susie Myerson.

With such a talented main trio it’s not surprising the show was brought back for a second season late last year.

It’s not just a fantastic cast that’s ramping up the ratings. The series takes place in NYC in the 1950s and tells the story of a Jewish housewife who discovers her businessman/stand-up comedian husband is a joke stealer AND two-timer.

To cope with the discovery, she delves into comic territory and finds out she’s pretty good! Despite being a comedy, the series also tackles gender and religious issues without dampening the mood. Its claim to fame is the brilliant writing paired with an outstanding lovable heroine!

‘One Mississippi’

One Mississippi met its unfortunate end in 2017 despite having some pretty impressive ratings. A quick search shows that the dark comedy pulls consistently amazing responses across all the major sites including IMDb (7.2/10) and (8.2/10). Rotten Tomatoes also has the show ranked at 96%, with the second season going out with a bang, evident by the coveted 100% reception

The show stars Tig Notaro, not surprising considering the plot is based on her life. Notaro finds herself back in her hometown after her mother passes away. Coming home is hard and she struggles to find her footing while battling her health issues.

Ultimately, following the radio host as she discovers some troubling truths about herself and her family make for an exceptional experience.

‘Sneaky Pete’

Sneaky Pete earned a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes and for a very good reason! The show is one of the newest additions to the Amazon Studios’ tribe but the first season had such amazing reviews, it inspired Amazon to push out a second season and third season.

So what’s so special about Sneaky Pete that it’s been renewed twice and has had the critics raving? The show follows con artist, Giovanni Ribisi after he gets out of prison. To evade a gangster who is waiting for him on the outside, played by Bryan Cranston, he adopts his former cellmate’s identity. Despite the solid plan, things don’t go over that easily and Marius finds himself having a hard time making his way through a life long gone.

Transparent has taken home two Golden Globes throughout its short lifetime. The show follows Morton Pfefferman, played by Arrested Development’s Jeffrey Tambor, a man who decides to embrace a life as a transgender woman. The change puts pressure on Pfefferman’s friends and family to adjust to his shift from Morton to Maura.

The show takes a brutally realistic look at the struggles that transgender people face as they work towards creating understanding between themselves and the world around them. Sadly a sexual misconduct scandal has the show shelved despite a request for a fifth season. In the meantime, you can always check out the other four seasons and see just why the critics rated it an impressive 96% with the third season pulling its weight with a 100% Tomatometer score!
