These Are the Best Original Shows on Netflix Right Now
Looking for something new to watch? Netflix offers some of the best original content across the board. They have captivating movies and series that’ll keep your attention until the very end.
Over the last few years, Netflix has released some genuinely outstanding series, ones that have created their own cult-like following. The series are so good that many have them have inspired follow-up seasons.
In case you missed the memo, here are some of the best original shows to watch on Netflix right now.
5. ‘Bojack Horseman’ (Season 1-5)
Bojack Horseman may be animated, but it isn’t for the faint of heart. The comedy takes place in a world where humans live alongside anthropomorphized animals.
The protagonist, BoJack, is an alcoholic struggling with depression and self-loathing. He used to be a big actor on the circuit, but after his ’90s sitcom went off the air, he faded into the background.
After 18 years of wallowing in his own despair, the washed-up actor decides to make a comeback. The show follows his journey to stardom and explores some pretty dark themes along the way.
It’s a rollercoaster ride to say the least and has been renewed time and time again. Oh and by the way fans can look forward to Season 6 popping up this year!
4. ‘Stranger Things’ (Season 1 & 2)
Stranger Things somehow became an instant cult classic when it joined the Netflix roster in 2016. The series stars Golden Globe-winner Winona Ryder as the mom of the year Joyce Boyers.
One day her young son goes missing and she’s willing to move mountains to find him. The investigation that his disappearance triggers becomes a terrifying exploration into the unknown, one that even Will’s friends are in on.
There are all kinds of mysteries to be ironed out and everything from government experiments to supernatural beings makes an appearance. Netflix subscribers couldn’t get enough of the insane adventures of the inhabitants of this small Indiana town. Guess that’s why it was renewed for a second season and will be coming back for a third later this year.
3. ‘The Haunting of Hill House’ (Season 1)
The Haunting of Hill House is another Netflix original to climb up the ranks last year. If you’re a horror fan with a love for easter eggs, THoHH is for you! When the show first dropped news on the grapevine was that the show was keeping viewers looking under their beds and checking their closets on a daily basis.
The show is SO good that Stephen King, the undisputed master of horror, gave it two thumbs up. The story follows a family who lived in the most famous haunted house in the country (before it gained that title of course)! Once they get older, they escape the home only to be dragged back in when the house beckons their return.
It’s a wild ride with ghosts lurking around every corner, literally. If you can stomach the horror, make a game of seeing how many of these creepy phantasms you can spot. Oh, and if this doesn’t have you clenching your teeth perhaps the source material, Shirley Jackson’s 1959 novel of the same title, will.
P.S. — Season 2 is coming later this year!
2. ’13 Reasons Why’ (Season 1 & 2)
13 Reasons Why shook viewers to the core when it debuted on March 31, 2017. Listening to Hannah Baker, played by the little known Katherine Langford at the time, explain why she killed herself to those closest to her is absolutely riveting.
The controversial show did a fantastic job at tackling a taboo topic. While some people were concerned the Netflix original glamourized suicide, others felt it’s one of the best series of its kind.
The series was so good it was cleared for a second season. It focuses on the trial put forth by Baker’s mom against the school in regards to her daughter’s suicide. Another riveting arc. 13 Reasons Why season 2 also made it to the most-binged list, so it’s no surprise that the show will be coming back to Netflix with a third season.
1. ‘On My Block’ (Season 1 & 2)
On My Block was rated the most-binged original series to hit Netflix last year. The show follows four street-savvy teens, Cesar, Ruby, Monse, and Jamal, as they work their way through the drama surrounding their everyday lives. The quartet are high school freshman trying to keep things together while navigating the dangers of South Central, Los Angeles.
Each episode gives Netflix subscribers a front row seat as the teens face “the struggles of puberty, the bliss of first love, the trauma of heartbreak, the threat of gang violence and everything in between.”
The show was so good that it was brought back for a second season that just dropped on March 29th. If you haven’t seen the top-notch coming-of-age dramedy, you should definitely go check it out ASAP!
