These Are the Most Expensive (and Impressive) Engagement Rings in the Sports World

One of the perks of being a professional athlete is a giant salary. That means when sports stars fall in love, they’re able to pop the question with some impressive sparklers.

Over the years, we’ve seen several celebrities get engaged to athletes, and they’ve got the bling to prove it. Here are some of the most expensive engagement rings from the sports world.

When Alex Rodriguez proposed to Jennifer Lopez during their romantic getaway in the Bahamas, he did everything in his power to make sure it came out perfect. For the former Yankees shortstop, that meant lots of practice. During an interview on Live with Kelly and Ryan, Rodriguez revealed that he practiced the proposal three times before the big day, using his assistant as a stand-in for Lopez.

“We rehearsed this three days in a row,” Rodriguez said. But by the third day, the weather turned against him, and Rodriguez became extremely nervous that the details of the “set” would be ruined. “On Wednesday it rained,” he said. “So it played with my background, I got really nervous.”

However, when he finally popped the question to Lopez, it was a beautiful, picture-worthy event. Shortly after, both Rodriguez and Lopez posted a series of gorgeous photos to their separate Instagram accounts, including a close up of the ring.

The ring is a stunning and huge, emerald-cut diamond which could be worth up to $5 million. Since the couple hasn’t released details about the ring, except for the photo, experts are left to speculate it’s value, and there’s been some disagreement.

The president of SuperJeweler.com told People that he estimates the diamond is between 11 and 15 carats and valued around $1 to $1.9 million. But experts from Shane Co and Rare Carat had much larger estimates. They believed the diamond was around 15 to 20 carats and worth $4.5 to $5 million.

Despite the disagreement about size and value, every jewelry expert who looked at the ring agreed that it was a flawless stone of very high quality.

Gabrielle Union’s engagement ring from Dwyane Wade

When Miami Heat’s Dwyane Wade decided to ask Gabrielle Union for her hand in marriage, he made sure that he had the perfect ring to fulfill her fantasy. According to People, Wade worked closely with Jason Arasheben, CEO of the jewelry company, Jason of Beverly Hills, to choose the engagement ring.

“I made three separate personal visits to Miami to present different options until we found the perfect stone,” Arasheben said. “He had been planning it for months and was very particular to find the stone of her dreams.”

Wade finally chose an 8.5-carat cushion-cut diamond ring valued at almost $1 million, and Union seems to be very happy about it. After he popped the question, Union posted a close-up photo of the ring to Instagram, along with the caption, “Sooooo this happened… #Yessss.”

Vanessa Bryant’s engagement ring from Kobe Bryant

The world is still mourning the loss of Laker’s star, Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gigi. But none more so than his wife of nearly 20 years, Vanessa Bryant. The couple met when they were still very young. He was 20 and she was only 17, and they quickly fell in love.

Once she turned 18, they married in 2001. Since they were still so young, and this was many years ago, there aren’t many details about Vanessa’s original ring, but that wasn’t the one she wore for most of their marriage anyway.

In 2003, Bryant gave his wife an upgrade. According to the Los Angeles Times, he commissioned an 8-carat purple diamond ring, worth around $4 million from Rafinity jewelers in Santa Monica. But according to another jewelry expert, Alan Bronstein, the diamond may not be exactly as reported, although he hasn’t examined the stone for himself.

“I’m assuming it’s a spectacular purple-pink diamond, because in nature, purple does not exist in an 8-carat stone,” Bronstein said of Brant’s ring. “Purple is a lavendar, thistle color, and diamonds only come in that color in small stones. But a very strong pink color with a purple tint, nature does make those stones.”

Kate Upton’s engagement ring from Justin Verlander

After the Detroit Tigers pitcher, Justin Verlander decided that he’d met the woman of his dreams, he worked closely with designer Anita Ko to create a unique ring for Kate Upton. The jeweler told E! News, “Justin and I collaborated on creating the most oerfect one-of-a-kind ring that is rare and of exceptional quality… just like thier love.”

The ring which ended up on Upton’s left hand featured a huge, round-cut diamond in a pave setting. According to an expert for US Weekly, the bling is estimated to be 8 carats and could be worth about $1.5 million.

Kim Kardashian’s engagement ring from Kris Humphries

Although she wears another ring now, when Kim Kardashian briefly married former NBA star, Kris Humphries, she sported a massive sparkler. The Lorraine Schwartz creation featured a 16.21-carat center diamond and two 1.8 carat side diamonds and was worth $2 million.

However, after their 72-day marriage ended, Humphries ended up with the ring and he sold it at auction for charity. The massive ring sold for $749,000 in 2013, less than half of its original value.
