These Celebrities Are Good Friends With First Ladies

First ladies can play a pretty substantial role in how the country is perceived. Some are quieter, like Laura Bush, content to act as support for their husbands. Others, like Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton, have louder voices and their own agendas. And some, like Melania Trump, have great style.

Still, the somewhat peculiar position of being the first lady of the United States opens all kind of doors giving these women access to A-listers and exclusive circles. Sometimes they even leave the White House with genuine friendships with celebs. You’ll never believe which stars are super tight with the first ladies.

During former President Barack Obama’s presidential campaigns, Beyoncé and her rapper husband JAY-Z were avid supporters of the Obamas, and eventually, they became close friends with the former first couple. The Lemonade singer and Mrs. Obama, in particular, share a close bond. Beyoncé has used her social media platforms to publicly congratulate Mrs. Obama on various achievements and wished her well for her birthday.

In a 2012 radio interview, the former president said, “I’ve gotten to know these guys over the first several years. They’re good people. Beyoncé could not be sweeter to Michelle and the girls. We talk about the same things I talk about with all my friends.”

As Mrs. Obama told DeGeneres, “I was still on her magazine cover first.” Ted Johnson, a senior editor at Variety, explained, “Oprah is pretty obvious. Michelle Obama even had a ladies’ getaway with Winfrey in 2014, partying it up at the OWN creator’s Hawaii estate.”

Jerry Zipkin was an eccentric socialite, and heir to a massive real-estate fortune.  He became a celebrity in his own right by associating with famous women, including the late first lady, Nancy Reagan. Well before her husband was elected to the White House, Zipkin and Mrs. Reagan were tight.

According to People, he was often her escort when the former president was too busy to attend events with her. Zipkin told People in 1981, “I believe a woman can have a best man-friend, and a man can have a best man-friend. But a woman cannot have a best woman-friend. A best woman-friend will do her in, whereas the best man-friend won’t.”

Mrs. Reagan said upon Zipkin’s death in 1995, “He was the best friend you could ever have. I can’t remember when and how I met him, but it must have been about 45 years ago. It seems that Jerry has always been part of my life.”

Though she has since served as the Secretary of State to the United States and the Democratic nominee for president, Clinton also served two terms as the nation’s first lady. With her long career in politics and activism, it makes sense then that Clinton would have quite a few celebrity friends.

One of her besties is Oscar-nominated actress Meryl Streep, and honestly, we’re jealous.

Unfortunately, because of her who her husband is, and because she seems to be very private in general, Melania Trump doesn’t seem to have any friends at all, much less any celebrity one. However, when France’s first lady Brigitte Macron visited the White House in April 2018, the two women did seem to connect.

Macron told Le Monde, “[Melania] is kind, charming, intelligent and very open. [She’s] actually really fun. We have the same sense of humor. We laugh a lot together.”

Perhaps there are hints of a burgeoning friendship there.

Sarah Jessica Parker was also an important celebrity advocate for former President Barack Obama. She attended numerous events and gave talks, which provided her the opportunity to connect with Mrs. Obama on issues close to her heart.

Kim Serafin, an entertainment reporter, told E! News, “I think Ellen DeGeneres, Sarah Jessica Parker, I can see them, in whatever they decide to do especially when it’s their charitable issues that they’re involved in, to kind of recruit these celebrities to help them. And I think all of these celebrities absolutely would line up to help them in whatever they wanted to do.”

She not only gave several speeches endorsing them and their causes, but she also attended various events including the former president’s birthday party, and White House dinners.

The ultra-private celeb is also tight with Eva Longoria, so we can see why she and Mrs. Obama bonded even further.

It might seem shocking that former President George W. Bush is good friends with former first lady Michelle Obama, but considering our polarizing political times, it shouldn’t be. On many occasions, over the past several years, Mrs. Obama and President Bush have been photographed together at various events.

In fact, in 2016, a picture of them embracing at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture opening went viral. Bush told People, “When I saw her, it was a genuine expression of affection. She kind of likes my sense of humor. Anybody who likes my sense of humor, I immediately like.”
