10 Things We Know About Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner’s Divorce
Hollywood is full of terrible divorces, which often include drawn out fights in court, celebrities insulting each other in the press, and stars accusing their partner of some serious crimes. But then there are the celebrity couples who truly try to keep their divorce quiet and drama-free.
The celebrity divorce between Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner is one such break-up. The couple worked together on the movie, Daredevil and got hitched in 2005. They announced their separation years ago, but it looked like they were working through it until they finally filed for divorce in 2017.
So what exactly is happening? Here are 10 things we know about Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner’s divorce.
1. They filed for divorce on April 13, 2017
Both Affleck and Garner filed for divorce on April 13, 2017 and their paperwork looked almost identical, according to People Magazine. They both cited “pro persona” as the reason, which means they will be representing themselves instead of using a lawyer for the divorce. This is pretty unusual, and there have been theories that this means the couple will create an agreement privately in order to keep disputes out of the public eye. They also didn’t cite the date of separation on their paperwork.
It seems like the two are on the same page in terms of the divorce, but there’s still work to be done. According to TMZ, Affleck and Garner haven’t talked about how they will divide their assets, so that has yet to be figured out. There reportedly isn’t a prenup, and they have to figure out a child custody agreement.
2. They are seeking joint custody of their children
The two have three children together, Violet, Seraphina, and Samuel. “They remain friends and continue to co-parent their three kids amicably,” a source close to the actors told CNN. “They had always planned to divorce but just needed time. As always, their children are their first priority.”
3. The couple first announced their split in 2015
This divorce might be shocking to some, but the couple announced their separation on June 20, 2015. The announcement came a day after their 10 year anniversary.
“After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce,” the couple said in a statement to E! “We go forward with love and friendship for one another and a commitment to co-parenting our children whose privacy we ask to be respected during this difficult time.”
4. Affleck denied rumors that he cheated with the nanny
After the news of their split broke, there were rumors that Affleck cheated on Garner with one of their nannies. This was the assumption because a nanny was fired by Garner after the nanny reportedly went on a trip with Affleck and Tom Brady. However, Affleck released a statement denying that claim.
A rep told E! News that “all allegations of a romantic relationship are baseless and untrue.” The rep also made it clear that “dating is not his focus and it hasn’t been his focus throughout the separation period.”
5. Garner also denied that the nanny was the reason for the divorce
When asked about “nanny-gate” the mother set things straight in an interview. “Let me just tell you something,” she told Vanity Fair. “We had been separated for months before I ever heard about the nanny. She had nothing to do with our decision to divorce. She was not a part of the equation. Bad judgment? Yes. It’s not great for your kids for [a nanny] to disappear from their lives.”
6. Affleck and Garner spent Easter together, after filing
The pair has been able to remain close throughout their split, and it looks like that will continue even through their divorce. They were seen together on Easter Sunday after they filed for divorce and attended Easter services with their children, according to Vanity Fair.
7. Affleck revealed that he is getting treatment for alcohol addiction
The actor and director announced his step to recovery on Facebook on March 14, 2017. In the statement, he thanked Garner for her support. This could explain why the actors seem to be so close through this trying time in their relationship.
8. Affleck has reportedly started dating again
The divorce might not be final, but the Oscar winner has reportedly been dating. According to TMZ, he is dating and seeing someone, but “not seriously.” A source also said, “He’s ready to move on.”
There have yet to be any reports about whether Garner is dating too.
9. Affleck is moving out of the family’s guesthouse
While the couple was separated, Affleck stayed in the family guesthouse. According to TMZ, he has found a house he likes and is close to his family. Affleck and Garner’s goal is to be as close as possible for the children. On May 9, 2017 there were reports that the actor officially moved out.
“The family house is for Jen and the kids now, Ben won’t have any things at the house,” a source said according to People Magazine. “The kids are doing well. They have been to Ben’s new house.”
10. Garner says she doesn’t regret marrying Affleck
In an interview, the actress was pretty open about her love for Affleck in an interview with Vanity Fair. ”
I didn’t marry the big fat movie star; I married him. And I would go back and remake that decision. I ran down the beach to him, and I would again. You can’t have these three babies and so much of what we had. He’s the love of my life. What am I going to do about that? He’s the most brilliant person in any room, the most charismatic, the most generous. He’s just a complicated guy. I always say, ‘When his sun shines on you, you feel it.’ But when the sun is shining elsewhere, it’s cold. He can cast quite a shadow.
