Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life gave us many hints of what we can look forward to with its official trailer. But the four episode series has revealed a lot more than just what the trailer shows. We are getting a lot of familiar characters back, but there will be new ones as well. The revival’s big theme will revolve around change.
Change due to Edward Herrmann and therefore character, Richard Gilmore passing away. But also change because these characters are going through a transitional period in their lives. So what exactly will change and what will stay the same in the new episodes? Here are 10 things we know about Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.
1. The events in Season 7 will be taken into account
Many fans hate the last season of the show because the creator, Amy Sherman-Palladino was no longer there to write it. The characters were a little bit different, and big things did happen, so it left fans wondering if they’re supposed to pretend the last season never happened. Those who enjoyed that final season can cheer because it’s still canon.
“We had to pick them up where they left off,” Sherman-Palladino told TVLine. “Luckily, the elements that we really wanted to play were not taken or destroyed by whatever they did in Season 7. So it actually worked out quite nicely.” Funnily enough she didn’t watch the last season fully, but she caught some scenes and asked around about what happened.
2. Lorelai and Luke are struggling to move forward in their relationship
The couple took a long time to get together so it’s definitely a relief that they are still a couple. However, they are trying to figure out where they’re heading. “What I can tell you is that we are together,” Patterson revealed according to E! “and we are figuring out our next move. There are definitely some fireworks there. We did some really intense adult scenes. Since the movies are only an hour and a half long it has way more detail and the writing is deeper and seems longer so it sort of changed.”
3. Rory moves home after living in Brooklyn
We left off Season 7 with Rory leaving for Iowa to cover Obama’s presidential campaign. In time, she ended up moving to Brooklyn, but things aren’t great. She has to move back home and starts to question where she wants to go from there.
“Because the world is changing now,” Sherman-Palladino said according to E! “I think that’s something that a lot of 30-something, very well educated kids are going through, because they’re turning around going, wait a minute, ‘I did it! Why am I not getting where I need to go?'”
However, this move back home will probably not last long. She will also start traveling to find out more about herself and what she wants.
4. Rory will start off single but comes across all of her exes
One of the big questions fans wanted to know was Rory’s relationship status. We left off with her graduating from Yale, and being pressured into marriage by Logan. She turned him down, which also ended their relationship. But did she pick up where she left off with any of her old beaus?
“She’s … single,” Sherman-Palladino told TVLine, “in the sense that she’s not married. But she’s dating like any young woman with that face would be.” In the trailer we see that Jess, Logan, and Dean have all come back for the show’s new episodes. So what exactly are they up to?
5. Jess comes back to Stars Hollow on a mission
Milo Ventimiglia told E! that Jess “pops into Stars Hollow” to “accomplish” something. We saw in the trailer that he talks to Rory who reveals she is out of a job and down on her luck in a conversation with Jess. In the past, Jess was able to talk Rory into going back to Yale. Maybe he will be sending her off in another direction once again.
6. Dean gets a very small part
We also see Dean (Jared Padalecki) in the trailer at his old stomping grounds. Padalecki has a very small role set in Doose’s Market, where we’ll get to see what Dean is up to now. He also claims that the scene will give the character closure after all that has happened.
So will they rekindle their romance? We already know the answer! “I know they’re not going to end up together,” said David Sutcliffe who plays Rory’s father, Christopher, “but Rory and Dean seem like a good couple.” So sorry, Team Dean. But at least you still get to see Padalecki on Supernatural.
7. Emily will be going through change after Richard’s death
Emily and Richard had a long relationship that included some ups and downs. So it makes sense that a lot of her identity has been wrapped up in him. Now that Richard has died, she is trying to figure out where to go from there. “What does the death of a husband mean to a woman who had a life very specific to her all these years,” Sherman-Palladino asked. “Where does she go from here?”
We see in the trailer that she gets a huge portrait of Richard made. She also starts cleaning out the house by getting rid of things that don’t make her happy.
8. Rory and Paris make it back to Chilton
At the end of Season 7, Paris decides she is going to medical school and her boyfriend Doyle follows her to continue their relationship. There have been some promo photos showing both Rory and Paris back at Chilton. Some fans have come up with the theory that Rory is now teaching at Chilton, but others believe it may be career day and that’s why the two friends are there.
9. Sutton Foster and Mae Whitman are joining the cast
After Gilmore Girls, Sherman-Palladino created Bunheads which starred Sutton Foster. The show didn’t make it past one season, but the actress will play a part in the Gilmore Girls revival. In the trailer you can catch a glimpse of her dancing. Perhaps she is Miss Patty’s protégé?
Mae Whitman who played Lauren Graham’s daughter on Parenthood will also be in the revival. It will be a very small cameo, according to Digital Spy.
10. We are getting new townies
We love Babette, Gypsy, and the other supporting characters who make Stars Hollow the town that it is. But it’s been nine years, so it would make sense that some new people would have moved in. We are getting two new townies named Berta and Alejandro. They are a Peruvian couple and Alejandro works as a handyman, according to E! There will also be a character named Nat Compton, who is never happy, and many more new characters. Of course, we will also meet Lane’s twins who are now nine.
