This ‘American Horror Story’ Alum Wants To Come Back For Season 10

After nine seasons, American Horror Story is a force. The show is going strong even after eight years, with this past season being its highest-rated yet. There are so many characters in this world and some superb actors that portray them year in and year out. Season 10 is coming up next year, and the cast and theme have yet to be announced. One actress that wants to come back, though, is Kathy Bates

Kathy Bates wants to come back to ‘American Horror Story’

On Dec. 13, Bates joined the cast of The Talk on their show as a guest and discussed different things in her career. One host asked her if creator and writer Ryan Murphy had reached out about her appearing in the upcoming season. “He hasn’t exactly reached out. I know he’s gonna bring some of us back,” she divulged. “And Brad Falchuk, who also writes and produces that show, sent me a big bunch of roses. So, I don’t know.”

It does sound like they might try to ask her back. Bates appeared on five seasons of American Horror Story, with her first being Coven and her last being Apocalypse. She didn’t have a role in 1984, but it sounds like she’s itching to come back. When asked again if she could go back, she said, “Yeah.” And if she could choose a character to come back as?

“Well, I would love to choose. I really, you know I love Madame LaLaurie, but I also loved Ethel Darling who was the bearded lady,” she said. “Although when Ryan called me and he’s on the other end of the phone, so excited. He said, ‘And you’re gonna play a bearded lady,’ and I was like, ‘Oh, oh ok. That’s gonna be great, I’m so excited.’” That last bit was a little sarcastic, but it seems that the Freak Show character stuck with Bates.

Could Ethel Darling return?

At the beginning of American Horror Story, when the show was establishing itself, it was unheard of for the seasons to crossover, let alone for characters to return after the season they debuted on. But as the show progresses, the connections between them all are much more prevalent.

The most obvious example of this was in Season 8 when Murder House and Coven crossed over, but other characters seem to have an endless life within the AHS world. Ethel Darling died in Freak Show, but death never stopped anyone on the show. So she could return as a ghost or in a flashback of sorts.

The Season 10 theme is still under wraps

Season 10 doesn’t have a theme yet, but Murphy has been thinking on it. In a Nov. 13 interview with Deadline, he said that he was pretty set on which he would choose. “Every season by Halloween, I come up with what the winner (theme) is and I already came up with an idea for season 10,” Murphy said.

He also calls out an alien theme, something fans have wanted since Asylum finished. “There’s always the runner-ups, and I’m like ‘Hmm could this be something?’ We flirted with aliens, we flirted with space, we flirted with some things that were more interesting than others,” he said. “I think that at the heart of it, it’s always about Americana. It would be hard to do something like that idea you mention, not that I wouldn’t.”

Whichever it might be, Bates is ready to return. And fans would, of course, be thrilled about it.
