This Is How Much Weight ‘Dance Moms’ Star Abby Lee Miller Lost in Prison
We know Abby Lee Miller best for her controversial tactics on Dance Moms. As the owner of the Abby Lee Dance Company, the star has proven she knows how to make little girls into big stars with her mentorship — though she’s certainly not easy on the dancers along the way. Even so, fans loved watching Miller grow with her students over the years before the drama of her prison sentence took over.
Back in 2016, Miller was caught up in some legal trouble that involved her going to prison. After her sentence, however, fans noticed the star seriously slimmed down. Here are the details of her prison time and dramatic weight loss.
She was set to serve 366 days in prison for bankruptcy fraud

The public first caught wind of the bankruptcy fraud scandal back in 2015. According to People, Miller was indicted for hiding over $755,000 in secret bank accounts. The United States Attorney’s Office then claimed she was making false claims when it came to her income because this money was hidden. As for why she would commit the crime, her lawyer claimed she was trying to save her dance studio.
To make matters worse, Miller was also allegedly instructing other people to help her hide the money. In one email, she even instructed those who had access to the funds to not put them in the bank. Miller also allegedly snuck $120,000 in Australian currency back to the U.S. by splitting the cash into plastic bags and having her friends carry it in their luggage, People says. By June 2016, she pleaded guilty and was sentenced to jail for a year and a day.
How much weight she lost after 8 months in jail
Even before her sentencing, Miller was thinking about how she wanted to lose weight — so she underwent gastric sleeve surgery weeks before she knew if she’d have to serve time. People notes Miller said the producers of Dance Moms were attempting to keep her overweight, so she wanted to take matters into her own hands. “I hate what I look like on TV and I want to look better and nothing makes the mothers more jealous,” she said.
It appears the gastric sleeve and prison time resulted in serious weight loss for Miller, too. Her year-long sentence was reduced to eight months before she was released to a halfway house, and Entertainment Tonight notes she lost around 100 pounds when the public saw her again. She also allegedly requested a tummy tuck, breast lift, and skin removal surgery upon her release.
Her current battle with cancer has likely resulted in more weight loss
It seems Miller’s prison sentence wasn’t her biggest hurdle to overcome, as after she was released into the halfway house, she was then diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, People reports. Miller was diagnosed after entering the hospital due to “excruciating neck pain” and arm weakness. Since then, she’s gone through radiation, 10 rounds of chemotherapy, and spinal surgery that has left her wheelchair bound. She still has cancer currently and is relearning how to walk, but she’s all set to star in the next season of Dance Moms, so it appears she’s in high spirits.
From the looks of it, it seems Miller has lost even more weight since her diagnosis. Her fans are hoping she’ll be quickly on the mend and back in good health soon.
