‘This Is Us’: Is Cassidy Leaving? Fans Think Jennifer Morrison Will Return in the Fall Finale
This Is Us Season 4 has been a bumpy ride for the new Big Three — Kevin (Justin Hartley), Cassidy (Jennifer Morrison), and Nicky (Griffin Dunne). But fans don’t know if they want the trio to get off just yet. In the Nov. 12 episode of the NBC drama, something big happened to Morrison’s character. And now, viewers are wondering if Cassidy is leaving This Is Us. However, most fans seem to think Morrison will return in the fall finale — or at least still appear in the future episodes.
[Spoilers for This Is Us Season 4 ahead!]
What happened to Cassidy and Kevin on ‘This Is Us’?
Throughout the fourth season of This Is Us, the NBC series teased a blossoming friendship — or perhaps a potential romance — between Kevin and Cassidy. Then in the Nov. 5 episode, titled “The Dinner and the Date,” the two recovering alcoholics hook up.
The following week, in the episode called “Sorry,” Kevin and Cassidy deal with the aftermath of their actions. Both parties express remorse for hooking up. And although Cassidy tells Kevin they did nothing wrong, Kevin sulks at a bar. But in a turn of events, Kevin doesn’t drink — instead, he opts for club soda. However, he still chooses the path to self-sabotage by picking a fight at the bar.
Meanwhile, Nicky and Cassidy, who is about to sign her divorce papers, look for Kevin. When they find him, Kevin is covered in bruises. And of course, it’s right before Nicky’s court hearing.
When Cassidy treats Kevin’s wounds, she tells him her divorce isn’t his fault, it’s hers. Then at the hearing, Nicky delivered a Jack-Pearson-level monologue and revealed he thought he was broken for 40 years. But Nicky recognizes that he was just sick. And ultimately, he needs to accept help from the people who care about him the most.
Nicky’s speech touches Cassidy and Kevin, who realize they don’t need to punish themselves for their actions. Then after the hearing, Kevin tells Cassidy he’s leaving for the holidays and then heading back to California for good.
“I hope you find your happy ending,” Cassidy says. And once Kevin echoes her sentiments, Cassidy leaves to eat dinner with her family.
‘This Is Us’ fans think Cassidy isn’t leaving and Jennifer Morrison will return
“Cassidy is such a great character and if this is the end, I guess it is what it is,” one Reddit user wrote. “I just don’t think that was a satisfying ending for someone who was billed to be a major recurring character this year?”
But some fans wondered if Morrison will return as Cassidy in future This Is Us episodes.
“Might not be the end. They could remain in contact. She knows where nick lives. I bet we see her again,” a fan wrote.
Meanwhile, other fans believe Cassidy will show up pregnant in the This Is Us Season 4 fall finale as a consequence of her one night stand with Kevin.
“Cassidy is pregnant next week, will put money on it,” a Redditor suggested.
“That’ll be the last scene,” another fan suggested. “Kevin will be cleaning or dropping Nicky off or whatever and he’ll get a call from Cassidy that she’s pregnant.”
“I expect the unexpected with this show,” a fan wrote. “I felt the same way last year when Nicky was shunned by Jack. I thought ‘all that time we watched Vietnam and this is the ending we get’. Now look at what Nicky brings to the table.”
Producers discuss whether or not Cassidy will leave ‘This Is Us’
After “Sorry” aired on NBC, Entertainment Weekly released an interview with producers Elizabeth Berger and Isaac Aptaker. And ultimately, it looks like fans should question if the episode truly showed Cassidy’s final departure from This Is Us.
“We definitely wanted to leave it open-ended so that you can interpret it a matter of different ways,” Berger said. “There’s a version where she and her husband now go off and live happily ever after. There’s a version where they just learn to co-parent together and maybe she finds her way back into our story.”
So can we expect Morrison’s return as Cassidy one day? Unfortunately, only time will tell at this point.
“I think that is definitely open for interpretation and we want people to wait and see,” Berger said.
