‘This Is Us’: Chrissy Metz Says Kate and Mark’s Storyline Is ‘Traumatic’
The fourth season of This Is Us introduced a multitude of new characters and mysteries that have fans begging for more. In the Oct. 22 episode, titled “Storybook Love,” the NBC drama reigned in Euphoria actor Austin Abrams to play Mark, teenage Kate’s (Hannah Zeile) boyfriend. And although viewers seemingly witnessed the start of a blossoming romance, not everything is as it seems. And now, Chrissy Metz, who plays adult Kate, revealed something ‘traumatic’ happens between Kate and Mark as This Is Us Season 4 continues.
[Spoilers for This Is Us Season 4 ahead!]
What fans have seen from Mark and Kate on ‘This Is Us’ so far
In the fourth episode of This Is Us Season 4, titled “Flip a Coin,” Mark offered Kate a job at the record store. Of course, she accepted and eventually, things start to heat up.
Then in “Storybook Love,” Mark shows up — unannounced and uninvited — at the Pearson family dinner to celebrate the marriage between teenage Kevin (Logan Shroyer) and Sophie (Amanda Leighton). He made the situation out to be like a “grand gesture” and told Kate that he only came to support her, to keep her from feeling like a fifth wheel. Mark also introduced himself to the Pearson family as Kate’s boyfriend.
Back in the present day, adult Kate and Rebecca (Mandy Moore) are looking through a few old Polaroids. And as Kate uncovers photos of her teenage self with her ex-boyfriend, her smile fades away.
“I was trying so hard to hold it together that year after your father died,” Rebecca told Kate. “And I wanted to believe so badly that you kids were happy. I didn’t see what was happening.”
Kate responded, “I didn’t see it either.” Thus, leaving the entire This Is Us fandom wondering what happened between Kate and Mark. And although fans need to watch the storyline unravel as the fourth season moves forward, it doesn’t look good.
What happened to Kate and Mark on ‘This Is Us’?
“We’re going to find out more information, but obviously we know that this has impacted her in such a way that she still talks about it with her mother,” Metz told Us Weekly. “It’s very clear something traumatic happened. We’re going to get to see that, how she’s affected and how that is, of course, taken into her adulthood.”
That said, viewers know that the present-day Kate is alive and well, married to Toby (Chris Sullivan) and raising baby Jack. Kate’s involvement with Mark will continue to fill in the gaps of Kate’s backstory. And when asked if Mark will impact Kate’s weight and happiness moving forward, Metz teased, “everything impacts everything.”
The actress continued: “There’s nothing that can be separated from anything. Whether we believe it or we see it or not, it absolutely impacts every choice. Every experience shapes the next. Everybody’s traumas, they touch and change different parts of us.”
Nevertheless, Metz makes it clear that This Is Us fans should not trust Mark — and especially not with our Katie-Girl.
“Jack was the first man she ever really trusted and loved, and it was her father,” Metz said. “I think she’s looking for that, constantly, and maybe Mark’s not the guy that she can love and trust.”
‘This Is Us’ Season 4 producers tell fans they should be concerned about Kate and Mark
Following “Storybook Love,” This Is Us producers Elizabeth Berger and Isaac Aptaker delved into what’s on the horizon for Kate and Mark in season 4. And yes, you should be worried.
“Fans should have a healthy amount of concern. I mean, there’s something ominous looming there, the way that Rebecca and Kate are speaking about that relationship in present day,” Aptaker said. “And although he seems like a sweet guy now, it certainly seems like that did not end well for Kate.”
Fans also shouldn’t take Mark’s sudden appearance at the Pearson family dinner as a grand gesture. But rather, something to be cautious about.
“That will definitely prove to be symbolic of Marc’s larger personality. He’s obviously somebody that goes for what he wants and feels entitled to show up to a place even when he’s not invited,” Berger said. “And we do feel like that is a little bit of a tell for where we’re going and what this guy is all about.”
But ultimately, the producers echoed Metz’s statements about the significant impact Mark will have on Kate.
“I think it’s a piece of a very complicated puzzle. But yes, I do think that first boyfriends and first loves make a lasting impression, and it’s not always the best impression,” Berger said. “And in this case, it certainly had a lifelong impact.”
