‘This Is Us’: Could Season 4 Mark the End of Kate & Toby?
Season 4 of NBC’s hit drama, This Is Us, is just around the corner, which means theories are circulating at a rapid pace. Among the more prominent storylines covered during the season 3 finale, Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby (Chris Sullivan) opened a whole new thread of “what ifs.”
The mystery of “her” on ‘This Is Us’ Season 3
In season 3 of This Is Us, viewers were taken on quite a ride. Jack’s (Milo Ventimiglia) story serving in Vietnam, as explored by his son, Kevin (Justin Hartley), led to the discovery that Jack’s little brother, Nicky (Griffin Dunne), is still alive.
You’d think TIU writers would grow tired of throwing clues around, but they’re just getting started.
The concept of “her” was first mentioned in the season 2 finale of This Is Us, with the mystery answered in the last few seconds of season 3. “Her” appears to be Rebecca Pearson (Mandy Moore), many years into the future. Did we mention she’s dying?
The final scenes show Rebecca’s family gathering at Kevin’s house for, what could be, her final moments. Noticeably absent from her bedside is second husband, Miguel (Jon Huertas). In his place, surprisingly, is Nicky.
Other seeds planted in the season 3 finale are that Kevin has a son (by who?), Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and Beth’s (Susan Kelechi Watson) marriage survives. Also, Toby shows up without Kate. What does this mean?
If you rewind back to the season 2 finale, you’ll understand why Kate’s absence is unsettling, at the least. That final scene showed a different flash-forward: a wedding ring-less, Toby, answering a call from Randall about seeing “her.” Now that threads are beginning to connect, fans worry Kate and Toby may be headed for a dire season 4.
What happened to Kate and Toby in season 3 of ‘This Is Us’?
To appreciate where creator, Dan Fogelman (and his team of writers) have taken the stories leading up to season 4, it’s important to note where Kate and Toby have been. Toby suffered a long bout with depression as he and Kate struggled to conceive.
She ultimately because pregnant with, and delivered, baby Jack. He was born premature and stayed in the NICU. Further complicated matters? The tension between Kate and an overly helpful Rebecca throughout the days and nights in the hospital.
In the important season 3 flash-forward, Randall convinces Toby to join him in seeing “her.” He showed up alone and mentioned to Randall if he talked to Jack (his son, not deceased father-in-law), “they” were on the way.
Fans might deduce “they” doesn’t mean Toby and Kate, but perhaps Toby and someone else. Metz slyly gave a possible answer in an interview with Entertainment Weekly saying, “It could be a new wife. You never know.”
Sullivan also commented on whether fans should worry about their future together in season 4. In an alternate interview with Entertainment Weekly, he joked, “Depends on what you want to worry about.”
He also concluded he didn’t have a reason as to why he was tasked with bringing the sidewalk chalk.
“I’m not 100-percent certain anyone knows,” he said. “It’s like, ‘Let’s have him bring it in and we’ll figure it out’. When I asked Dan about it, he was like, ‘It could be a couple of things.’ And then he left.”
Sullivan said in a past interview, the season 2 scene was shot with a few different lines of dialogue. He was interested in seeing what made the final cut (because he otherwise wouldn’t know what happens with Toby and Kate, either).
Will Kate and Toby’s marriage survive season 4 of ‘This Is Us’?
Looking ahead to season 4 of This Is Us, Kate and Toby are new parents. They’ve made it past the waiting period in the NICU, and Rebecca and Miguel had planned to move closer to help out. All should be well, right? Not exactly.
“The places where this season goes, I think they’ve said it all … it is completely unexpected,” Sullivan recently told People.
Wherever you think we are going, we are going in a completely different direction,” he added. “The way the stories are unfolding is pretty amazing. Our writers and [Dan Fogelman] have done a pretty amazing job over four seasons keeping people surprised.”
Basically, when it comes to Kate and Toby’s fate on season 4, your guess is as good as ours. We just hope it won’t hurt as much as losing Jack.
This Is Us premieres Tuesday, September 24 at 9 p.m. EST on NBC.
