‘This Is Us’: Mandy Moore Prepared for Motherhood Playing Rebecca Pearson — ‘I’m Totally Ready to Have Kids Now’
Mandy Moore is going to be a mom! The 36-year-old This Is Us star announced the happy news on her Instagram page on Sept. 24, 2020, much to the delight of fans. “Baby Boy Goldsmith coming early 2021,” she wrote along with a photo of husband Taylor Goldsmith cradling her bump.
The actor has hinted at wanting kids in the past, so this announcement isn’t a huge surprise. And it may have been Moore’s experience on the hit NBC drama This Is Us that helped prove she could handle the huge responsibility of parenthood — including changing all those diapers.
Mandy Moore was eager to have children
Moore was married to singer Ryan Adams from 2009 until 2016. Following her divorce, she began dating musician Goldsmith after connecting with him on Instagram in 2015. The actor revealed she was a fan of Goldsmith’s band (The Dawes) and sparked a conversation with the lead singer. The rest, as they say, is history.
Moore and Goldsmith tied the knot in 2018, but even before that she was dreaming of having babies with him. “We can start a family, hopefully sooner rather than later, and establish our own traditions,” she told Shape magazine in 2017 (via Daily Mail).
She used her ‘This Is Us’ experience to prepare for babies
The Emmy-award winning actor found major success with her portrayal of Rebecca Pearson on This Is Us. Plus, the role may have helped her ease into the idea of becoming a mom — though in her case, not to triplets.
She had no experience with infants before starting on the show. “I didn’t know how to change a diaper,” she told Conan O’Brien during a 2017 interview (via Distractify). “I had crew members showing me how to change a diaper.”
Moore explained that she got to practice being a mom while filming the show. “I mean, we get to hold these newborn children, and I can’t believe their parents were willing to hand over their babies to me,” she said. “I’m like, ‘Hi, I’m Mandy. I have absolutely no experience with small children,’ and they’re like, ‘Here’s my two-week-old baby.'”
Mandy Moore got comfortable with motherhood on ‘This Is Us’
Being around so many precious co-stars didn’t just enhance Moore’s confidence — it also helped prove that she was ready for the next stage of life. She told O’Brien that being around newborns all the time on set “activated that maternal side.”
“I’m totally ready to have kids now,” she confirmed.
Though she does admit that she expects hard moments ahead. When speaking about playing Rebecca, Moore admits to recognizing parenting challenges. “It’s shown me that maybe I am not as patient as I thought I was,” she US Weekly in Feb. 2020. “But maybe it will be different when it’s your own children.”
She’s looking forward to sharing the work with Goldsmith, who Moore described as “the right person” to be her life partner. If he takes on diaper changing and other baby duties as diligently as Jack Pearson, then these two have nothing to worry about.
