‘This Is Us’: New Spoilers We Just Learned About Season 3

After becoming a breakout hit in its first season, This Is Us really took fans for a wild ride in Season 2. We saw the total breakdown of Kevin, Kate and Toby’s wedding, and — finally — we learned what happened with Jack. It was an emotional season with plenty of twists and turns, including somewhat of a cliffhanger ending.

So what does Season 3 have in store? We have five things you should know about the next season of This Is Us, plus three major questions we still have. That includes when the next season will debut (page 5) and that surprise twist relating to Jack’s family (page 7).

Go Team Miguel!

When we’re first introduced to Miguel in Season 1, it’s during the flashbacks as Jack’s best friend. Later, when it’s finally revealed that Jack isn’t around in the present day, we see that Rebecca is now in a relationship with Miguel. Even as time has gone on, many viewers resent Miguel the way Kevin does for moving in on his best friend’s widow.

But Season 3 might give us more reasons to like Miguel by telling his story. That is, according to Mandy Moore in an interview with Mario Lopez on EXTRA.

“I feel like that is going to be the biggest battle of the show,” said Moore. “Getting people to become Team Miguel. That storyline is going to be a big focus of next season, of Season 3.”

Will they show us how Rebecca and Miguel got together in a way that makes us less skeptical of Miguel? We’ll see.

This is Us Kate and Toby

Kate and Toby on This Is Us | NBC

As the family gets larger, it makes sense that they’d begin to explore the other family members a bit more. We saw that Toby’s parents objected to his decision to marry Kate, and the flash-forward showed that Toby was suffering from some pretty severe depression down the road.

Executive producer Elizabeth Berger talked with EW about what’s in store for Toby.

Obviously with the miscarriage, it was steps backward for Toby and Kate in terms of expanding their family, and I think that the desire to expand their family isn’t going to go away.

So that, along with other stresses that come with the first year of marriage will definitely be at play as we move forward … And moving forward as we get to know Toby better in season 3, we’re definitely going to be exploring his family and his relationships in a deeper way.

We’re very much here for more in-depth discovery of Toby.

An entire episode about Beth

Fans have plenty of theories regarding Beth (more on that later), but she’s going to be an integral part of Season 3. Apparently, Beth will get her own episode that dives into her past and examines how she became who she is. But further, Season 3 will take a hard look at her marriage with Randall, according to actor Sterling K. Brown.

“There will be a bit of an exploration of marriage with regards to Randall and Beth going through times that aren’t all sunshine and rainbows,” Brown said. “And that’s not to say that they are in danger of parting ways, but marriage is real and takes work.”

How will the couple deal with Deja and the fallout of the young girl taking a baseball bat to Randall’s prized BMW?

Beth is very much alive … for now

After the flash-forward at the end of Season 2, fans created some theories about what the future may hold for Beth. We see an aging Randall with Tess, his now-grown daughter. But the brief moment didn’t feature any other members of the family, prompting many fans to theorize that Beth may die young.

Actress Susan Kelechi Watson (Beth) told TVLine that there are no plans to kill her off.

I was like, “Dan (Fogelman), did you know people think that Beth might be dead?” And he was like, “I’ve heard.” And we both just kind of had a laugh about it. As far as I know, there’s no plans for Beth to die, but I do appreciate people looking out for her.

Of course, what else is she going to say when asked about whether it’s being hinted that Beth is dead? A lot of what makes This Is Us so good is delayed gratification, and with all the big reveals around Jack’s death in Season 2 they had to set up something for the future. If Beth does indeed die young, we may not find out in Season 3.

This Is Us will return in September

At the end of Season 1, NBC hit This Is Us with the less-common two-season renewal, giving the second-year show less to worry about as they wrote out the family’s story arc. No official date has been set for This Is Us to return with Season 3, but expect that it will come toward the end of September 2018.

We also know that Season 3 will consist of at least 18 episodes, just like the first two seasons.

Next: One huge lingering question

Who is ‘her’?

Sterling K. Brown as Randall Pearson on NBC's This is Us

Randall on This Is Us | NBC

The aforementioned flash-forward at the end of Season 2, Randall visits Tess (a social worker) at her office for a meal. At the end, he solemnly tells her, “It’s time to go see her, Tess.” She responds that she’s not ready, and Randall replies that he isn’t either. So, uh, who is “her” and what are they talking about?

Unfortunately, This Is Us isn’t in the business of giving away their biggest teases, and this one was placed at just the right spot to keep us all on the edge of our seats. Some fans assumed, as previously noted, that this dialogue indicates that Beth is dead. However, the scene follows Deja continuing to rebel and destroying Randall’s BMW. Could they be visiting Deja in prison?

What about Jack’s brother?

Milo Ventimiglia as Jack Pearson on This Is Us

Jack and Randall on This Is Us | NBC

With the heavy focus being on Jack’s relationship with Rebecca and his children, there hasn’t been a lot of time to flesh things out with his other family. We know that he has a strained relationship with his father, who we see Rebecca and Kate meet for the first time in Season 2.

But to finally seeing the heartbreaking way in which Jack dies, we also learn that Jack also had a younger brother, Nicky. All we really know about Nicky is that he served in Vietnam with Jack. Did he die during the war?

Producer John Requa had this to say about Jack to EW:

We can’t get into the details, but clearly this looms large in the person that he is. The big thing is that he keeps secrets, that he has compartmentalized and hidden away this part of his life, which obviously was his brother, and it was a big part. Obviously a major thing happened, some trauma of some sort.

Expect that we’ll learn more about Jack’s family in Season 3.

Next: Kevin’s new beau

Can Kevin make a relationship work?

Kevin on This Is Us | NBC

Kevin’s downward spiral was just one of many hard-to-watch storylines of Season 2. He had resolved to make things work with Sophie, his ex-wife and high school sweetheart. Fans were rooting for Kevin to find his happiness with the only woman he ever truly loved in a romantic sense. Unfortunately, he really screwed up his last chance with Sophie and went off the rails.

But the flash-forward showed Kevin with Beth’s cousin, Zoe, as they flew together to Vietnam. Having finally confronted some of his personal demons, will Rebecca’s least-favorite son finally be able to have a stable relationship with a woman? Expect that Zoe will stick around for a while, regardless of whether Kevin self-destructs again. She’s going to be a big part of Beth’s story, as well.
