Why Isn’t ‘This Is Us’ on Tonight, Nov. 24? Here’s When Season 5 Episode 5 Will Be Released

This Is Us finally came back to NBC with four all-new episodes. Now, the fifth season is taking another break. So why isn’t This Is Us on tonight, Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2020? Here’s what you need to know about the hiatus and when the show returns with season 5 episode 5. But be prepared. It looks like we won’t see the Pearsons again until 2021.

Why isn’t ‘This Is Us’ Season 5 Episode 5 on tonight, Nov. 24, 2020?

Despite the late start to This Is Us Season 5, it appears the NBC series will keep to its usual schedule. The show typically airs its fall finale in November and returns with its winter premiere in January. Now, the fourth episode from Nov. 17 will be the last for 2020. But the family drama will be back on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2021, with This Is Us Season 5 Episode 5.

While This Is Us fans may be disappointed in the seven-week hiatus, it’s clear the show has been working hard to create something spectacular, even amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. On Nov. 17, creator Dan Fogelman revealed the post-production team finished editing episode 4 the night before it was released.

“Can I give a little love to our unsung post department?  We finished (mixing, timing, etc) tonight’s episode LAST NIGHT,” Fogelman wrote on Twitter. “That has happened every ep this season. In midst of a pandemic. It was the only way to get 4 on this soon. Our Editors are bad*ss. Whole team is.”

Then in a separate post, Fogelman hinted This Is Us fans will receive “a lot of answers” upon the show’s return in January 2021. “The @ThisIsUsWriters are on fire and we’re making them as fast (and safely) as humanly possible,” he wrote. “I’m very excited about all that comes next.”

In the last episode of This Is Us Season 5 — titled “Honestly” — the NBC drama delved deeper into the Pearson family storyline. The episode focused on three of Kevin’s (Justin Hartley) timelines to highlight the character’s growth. That said, it didn’t touch on Kevin’s relationship with Madison (Caitlin Thompson) or even her pregnancy.

Meanwhile, Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby (Chris Sullivan) started moving forward with their adoption. Then when Ellie (Annie Funke) shared she considered abortion at the start of her pregnancy, Kate revealed a secret to Toby. After breaking up with her abusive ex-boyfriend, Marc (Austin Abrams), teen Kate (Hannah Zeile) found out she was pregnant.

This Is Us Season 5 Episode 4 also moved forward with Laurel’s (Jennifer C. Holmes) story. In the premiere, viewers discovered Randall’s (Sterling K. Brown) birth mom didn’t die during childbirth. She’s also been tied to a Vietnamese grandfather named Hai (Vien Hong). The connection has yet to be revealed. But in “Honestly,” Hai saw Randall in a viral video. So it seems we’ll find out more very soon.

The This Is Us Season 5 Episode 5 trailer previews what to expect when the show returns on Jan. 5. The teaser only features two members of the Big Three — Kevin and Kate. But Randall is notably absent.

In the present-day, Kevin and Madison appear to get into an argument about their future. “You made a commitment to me and these kids,” Madison says, reminding the father of her twins he wanted to be “all in.”

Meanwhile, teen Kate’s ex-boyfriend, Marc, returns in a flashback. “I really did miss you,” he says, leaning in for a kiss.

Then an interview with Deadline from November 2020, This Is Us executive producer and director Ken Olin confirmed the two cliffhangers from episode 4 will be addressed in episodes 5 and 6.

“We’re not holding off these things. I think the Kate story is addressed in Episode 5, and then in Episode 6 the Laurel story is addressed,” Olin said. “Then the larger emotional journey of the family and the relationships, those are things will play out over a longer period of time. But the more salient stories that raise questions, I think we’re going to address pretty quickly.”
